Some history questions about ATG

Could you help me with some questions on ATG history? Was ATG 7 the first online game? When was ATG 7 and ATG 8 first incorporated into the online game? Thanks, Jeff.

I am not the best about the history but I can get this started.

I found ATG 1 during the summer of 2002 it was run by the Sporting News. I played maybe 5 or so season but it was very expensive (like $24 per team or so)...I primarily played the football game and then stopped playing for years.

From what I understand, Sporting News Did ATG 1 thru ATG 6 like Summer 2002 to Summer 2012.

Then I re-discovered ATG after Sporting News and SOM split ways back in Aug 2012

From my exerience SOM then ran ATG 6 Aug 2012 thru 1st Quarter of 2013
ATG7 - Q1 2013 to July 2014
ATG8 - July 2014 to Apr 2020
ATG9 - Present

I'm sure there are many others that can fill in the details between Summer 2002 and Summer 2012.

I can confirm that timeline, started myself playing ATG I in 2002 and the rest of what he says time-wise seems accurate.

I have Barnstormers records going back to 2006 and believe it or not, a lot of people who still play were in the 2006 tour. (54 players !)

Nostalgia flash - names like Major Deegan, Munich Man, Nevdully, Harry Lime, PJ Axellson, PJMB, mforfun, Rob55, Odyssey Tiger, Penngray…..

I remember playing with you and them in the Bobby Moretti Las Vegas tournaments

I attended one of them. Rob55 beat me handily. That was also my first time playing the dice game. Yep B.o.b.b.y

To this day I still drink my coffee out of a blue coffee mug that he (Bobby) gave me (us) that has National Baseball Hall of Fame on the side.

Nice to see some of those blasts from the past(and present).....

Hi Jeff, since it looks like your question was answered, I think it would also be interesting to know how you found SOM online?
Longtime boardgame player who didn't know this existed? Saw it in an ad online?

Like many here, I was a long time boardgame player, then began playing in a limited fashion in 2003, first starting with the 20xx games.

Has been an occasional curiosity to many of us over the years how to attract players and what an optimized community growth model looks like. Most everyone here loves baseball passionately, the nuances and stats in particular, and SOMO fills a unique entertainment gap for people that are a bit more analytical than the average fantasy-style gamer. One glance at the folks in the BS Finals league and you would note these are not just "lucky" players--they are all great thinkers and competitors.

Overall, I think the game is vastly improved since SOM took the reins. Very much hope you enjoy the game and the community. Best of luck--lots of great information here and as you may have seen, the community aspect can be a superb enhancement to a fun game.

Great memories! The event (I was at the first one in '05, not sure if there were others) B.o.b.b.y hosted in Vegas was awesome! Can we get him to start playing again?

ATG was originally set up with rosters from different Pennant winners over the years. No player had more than one card, and the card for that game wasn't necessarily their best season (example, the first Musial card available was 1942's). Later as other teams were added, some players had multiple cards. I don't recall which ATG version switched the emphasis from all-time teams to simply the player's cards. That may have been when SOM took it from TSN, but not 100% sure on that.
