Japanese Baseball set

PostWed May 06, 2020 1:04 pm

I wonder if SOM would offer up one of the Japanese League seasons to be played? I mean have it available to play just like the 1986, or 1999 MLB seasons. I think it would be interesting. Thoughts?

They could do an ATG of Japanese players. Love to see a Sadaharu Oh card in his prime.

Imagine his 1973 or 1974 card

don't recall...as long as it isn't mixed in with the standard set, I don't know what the complaint would be.
And it would have to be separate.

But it is funny when you look at some of those Japanese league players like Oh...5'10 170 pound S. Oh slamming 50 HRs a year back then was crazy. I realize the parks and pitching quality in Nippon were different.

As we know from the ...jellyfish, Hideki Irabu. I won't call him the toad as Steinbrenner did, since he is deceased, but such a weird episode of baseball life he had in America. Always wondered if it was mostly mental, or if he was physically overmatched and just a lot of hype. Obviously it eventually became a mental health situation since he committed suicide, but I mean what sparked his decline. Pretty sad story.

They announced at one point they were going to add Japanese players to ATG. The masses were not in favor and the plan was scrapped.

Yes
people complained that they didn't want them as part of the set.

I remember this as well and I voted against adding them (and the Cuban players if you remember) to the ATG set. I remember that very well. But that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm Talking about making a whole Japanese season to be made available for us to play if we wish, For instance the 1973 Nippon season for example. Just like we might play the 1999 or 2019 MLB seasons. All Japanese players.

I can confirm.

When ATG8 was released, July 2014, SOM mentioned that they were weeks away from releasing a subset to ATG8 that would include ATG Cuban and Japanese players.

As I recall, several (perhaps as many as 15 to 20 individuals) in the community, raised a STINK and it was announced in like Aug or Sep that SOM had re-thought this idea and retracted the Cuban/Japanese subset release.

Correct, except it wasn't a subset. The cards would've been released into the main ATG Set.
