2020 Baseball Season

PostSun Jul 26, 2020 2:48 pm

Is anyone else underwhelmed by the new season? I just don't have the desire to watch a game. All sports are boring these days. There are very few characters any more and there are, of course, exceptions to the rule. Love him or hate him Puig is a character. He reminds reminds me of Serrano in Major League because he talks to his bats and he licks and kisses the bats. Maybe that's how he got covid and they certainly wouldn't let him do it if he were playing. But Joc Pederson said the thing he'll miss most about Puig is his joy for playing the game. "It is very bad to drink Jobu's rum!" Almost all of the players in all sports are boring, whinny, entitled little cry babies. But mostly BORING! And while I'm at it; GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

I tend to agree. Few if any characters, ugly and mean-spirited owner-labor negotiations. Plus, the loss of star power in the vaunted ace starter position due to anal-retentive analytics -- fewer starters along the likes of Tom Seaver, Randy Johnson etc. who could go deep into games and could draw fans to the park (not that that matters anymore, I guess). Now, the number-crunchers have taken over, and we have "openers," short starts for seemingly fragile starters treated like glass dolls, and too many dull relief changes. Who cares to watch the set-up men?

I don't dismiss your feelings. I feel like that sometimes, too. I cringe at seeing the DH infect my beloved National League. And the guy on 2nd to start the 10th inning--aggghhhhh!!!!

But overall, for me, I am L O V I N G it!

DeGromination! Cespedes home run first game back post-boar! Mets relievers crash and burn...deja-vu all over again! (yes I am a Mets fan). Baseball evolves, sometimes gets worse, sometimes gets better, but I love it.

The players who are bratty and spoiled, I don't like em. But I don't begrudge them being millionaires.

The game produces a hell of a lot of wealth, so let the folks who produce the wealth (the players) enjoy a chunk of the fruits of their labor! (I really can not stand college sports. It's just a @#$% wage theft scheme.)

Well, the runner on second is basically due to health concerns. The DH I guess in the NL is due to making sure players get adequate rest. These are just temporary things done during a pandemic.

I think the universal DH is inevitable, anyway. Pitching batting averages are plummeting. I was looking at one Arizona pitcher--Merrill Kelly--that went 1 for 52 with 25 Ks. ONE FOR 52! Who wants to watch such ineptitude? Hitting has become too specialized. Just about every pitcher who makes it to the bigs was a really good hitter in high school/college. But you cant dabble at hitting 98 mph fastballs.

I wonder about why it seems that the fame of players from the past seems to resonate more than you expect today's players will. Part of it--but only part of it--is that I think you think differently about players who played when youre a kid versus how you feel about players who play when youre an adult. It doesnt quite explain the fame of Mays, Williams, Clemente, Koufax, etc., etc. Maybe it's just baseball is not as big as it used to be.

Anyway...I'm glad they're playing. It's a welcome distraction.

By the way ...Pitchers batting BORING!....Runner on 2nd to start the tenth..GREAT idea!...a lot of those games go late into the morning and end with 10 people left in the stands and ruin a staff and offense for the next few days!

I'll buy the pitcher hitting ineptitude but the runner on second, come on! The runner on second is total bullshi#t! so your a relief pitcher and you start an inning with a runner in scoring position that you didn't put there and you and your team loose the game 5-4 for a phantom runner who didn't earn his way on base. This is total bullsh#t!!! Of course this is how millennials (I know your out there) continue to ruin our country. They don't want to earn anything. In the immortal words of Jimmy Dugan: “It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."
Why don't we just add a 10th fielder like in slow pitch softball league. And oh yes "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

I believe the run that scores is not an earned tun to the pitcher and the other team has the same opportunity to score the same way also. Golf does it pro and college football does it the NBA does it why not MLB the run that scores in the 17th inning at 2 in the AM in front of 10 fans nobody gives a shit about anyway ..just my opinion

The whole point is that whoever has the better bullpen will keep runners of the base paths and thus win the game eventually. They wont be magically awarded first base. Also the fact that the run is unearned doesn't remove the undeserved loss. If you don't like baseball then don't watch it but please don't advocate its destruction. Just my opinion. In golf they don't do anything of the sort. They don't start the hole on the green ten feet from the hole. They play complete holes until there is a winner. Just like extra innings in real baseball.

I have an unprecedented level of disinterest in this season, I just don't care - at all - about baseball this year. It's a combination of things, all of which takes away from my enjoyment of watching a game, which ultimately is a cherished memory of a relaxing way to spend time with with my father and talk about the intricacies of what is happening on the field with him, but most of all I feel like the whole compromised effort to get something, anything on the field has cheapened the sport to the point where I do not consider it to be real, legitimate baseball. I never look at the scores or the standings, I don't care which teams make their bogus playoffs, and I will be oblivious to whichever team ultimately is crowned champion in 2020, because in my opinion, none of it counts, this is a phony knock off facsimile of a season that doesn't really exist in the history books.
