Advice on Using SP/RP

PostMon Jul 27, 2020 3:12 pm

Okay, if I have someone like Urias or Yarborough this season, and I want them to relieve in between starts, how would I set it up? I see a lot of managers who get "in between" relief appearances out of these guys, but have never been able to do it.

My "thinking" is maybe I don't list them in the starting rotation, assign them a relief role in pitcher preferences, and then, on each day, I list them as per game starters? Although that would seem to require a ton of daily adjusting, is there any other way, and would my plan actually even work?

I have seen Urias relieve for 3 innings and then start the next game as well, with no effect on fatigue (which seems to be a glitch, but who knows this year with the A1?)

Thanks,

I am far from an expert but, yes, your proposed plan for occasional starts for the SP/RP types seems to make a lot of sense... will HAL agree??

Don't know the answer, but out of necessity I'm trying dual roles as an experiment. Only have deGrom listed in the rotation with Yarborough and Maeda assigned bullpen roles. Not bothering with per game starters. Yarborough lost games 1 and 2 in relief then won game 4 as a starter.

Thank you Scumby for the tip. Looks like maeda has a couple starts and couple reliefs too. However, without a rotation or per game, aren't you concerned HAL will start Kluber or bucholtz?

In the absence of a rotation or per game, Hal will always start your most expensive available SP. (That said, it's possible the recent changes to the bullpen fatigue rules might affect a starter's availability following a relief appearance, but I don't believe that's the case.)

No, like the previous poster said, barring injury, they won't start (seems like it so far). However, under the new rules if they were SP/RP they would get used in relief despite not being given a role (previously they would get used sparingly, mostly in long extra inning games).

Note the competition in the private league I posted is top notch. You won't face tougher competition. Results may be better with an autodraft league.

Maeda and Yarbough were coming in relief at FO. Turns out I once again forgot to change the Max/Aggressive default RP settings. wish SOM would change that.

I've been trying this on one of my teams. You have to have some sore of break in your rotation to get any meaningful amount of relief innings (i.e. it can't just be a 5 man rotation with no * starters). In my case, I have 2 * pitchers + Urias and 3 sub $1m starters. I've got Urias up to 87 innings through 78 games, so not a whole lot of extra use, but more than just starting alone, especially given that the * starters have taken some starts away from Urias (only 13 starts so far).
