How to minimize use of a specific reliever

Hi,

I invested in 4 solid relief pitchers and one $500,000 guy. Here’s a link to my roster: https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1593466. The guy I want to minimize is Butcher.

I have set up 2 roles for all of the guys I want in including late and behind. I have not setup any roles for Butcher. Last night he came in late and behind. The regular late and behind pitcher, Sadler, pitched 3.1 inning is the previous game. I would have wanted any one of my other rested pitchers to be called in but they were not.

What is the best way to minimize a rp role when you have 4 better ones?

Not sure. I am wondering if you hit avoid lefties and using prior to 8th and max 1-2 inn innings that might help.

here are the roles (no avoid lefties and use prior to 8th):

closer: Pagan
closer: Wittgren
Setup: Cordero
Setup: Pagan
Middle : Cordero
Middle Wittgren
Behind and Late: Sadler
Mopup: Sadler

Maybe you could move Sadler to Middle and Wittgren to behind and late. That will beef up your depth at behind and late. Hal will try to save your good pitchers in lower-leverage situations where a role is not specified. Then you just have to worry about the tied and 9+ role. I dont know that you do anything about those slots now but if Hal uses your fifty cent guy in either of those situations you might assume that Hal will put your best pitchers in closing situations and have them cover tied situations and/or extra innings instead. The new relief rules have made it very difficult to hide a fifty cent guy.

If you haven't already-- Set your closer usage to Regular. If it's set to Maximize, Pagan and Wittgren will often be passed over in non-save situations.

How about adding don’t remove before F* for your better relievers?

If you assign him no role at all, HAL may have license to deploy wherever. List him as your second mop up guy and see how that works.

If you have a guy you want to ride like a rented mule, use the first two relief roles to set him as “middle” and “setup” and “don’t remove before F8”.
