Very sad - One hundred years ago today, Aug 16 1920, he was beaned by Carl Mays and died one day later. I believe he is the only player to die from injuries suffered in a major league baseball game. His truncated 1920 card is pretty good for small ball teams / stadiums.
I'm not even sure that modern medicine could have saved him. It was a horrible event for his family, I'm sure, and for his teammates, and for all of baseball. His death brought about significant changes that, in turn, helped bring the era of smallball to an end.
I am old enough to remember seeing a major league player batting without a batting helmet. I knew he played for Boston and I looked it up and his name is Bob Montgomery and his last at-bat was in 1979. Imagine facing Nolan Ryan without a helmet? Crazy.
