If Gates Brown came up in 1973 instead of 1963 his career probably would have been a lot different. He was a perfect fit for the DH role. He wasn't a good outfielder and had a very poor throwing arm. Since the Tigers had Norm Cash at 1b and Willie Horton in LF (Kaline in RF) during Brown's entire career there was no room for him. With no free agency, he made a nice career as one of the greatest pinch-hitters ever.

Did I get the story wrong? Was there a similar hotdog incident with Dick Allen?

The iron content of Brown's glove was even greater than that of his prison bars. That's why he logged so little time in the field. But brother could he rake with the bat!!

What was it...about 10-12 years ago when Prince Fielder stole a nacho from a fan after chasing a foul ball to the wall?

Today an area like that is likely covered with netting to protect fans from foul balls so there would not be any food snatching.

That's great. I didn't know about that one!
Then there was Yankee Ruben Rivera, who stole Derek Jeter's glove and sold it to a sports memorabilia dealer for $2,500. According to this linked article "the team unanimously voted to release him because he violated the trust and santicy of the clubhouse." https://www.sportscasting.com/whatever- ... ers-glove/
Ruben R's once promising MLB career ended in 20003, following brief stints with the Rangers and Giants. Though, oddly enough, the Yankees signed and released him again in 2005, when he failed to hit in the minors.

Okay, now I've got to add something. Who knew? When I looked up Rivera's minor league record, I found that he continued to play in the Mexican League and elsewhere until he was 45, retiring as recently as 2019. And generally he hit quite well. In fact, after disappearing from view in the USA, Rivera just kept playing and playing on other soils. Over the course of 28 seasons at all levels, in MLB, the minors, and foreign leagues, Rivera played 3053 games, drove in 1687 runs and scored 1815 runs. He had 2765 hits and 504 HR. Basically Ruben could hit everywhere but in the majors, and it was this inability to hit major league pitching—not stealing Jeter's glove—that cost him a long big league career.

A really interesting guy. And as far as is known, he never stole a hotdog, or even popcorn.
