Basic hitter balance question

I’m in my third season , a 12 team $80 million league.

I see that the split of batter at bats is somewhere in the range of 4-5 times more against righties then lefties.

With that simple observation, doesn’t it make sense to draft players that are balanced stronger against righties then lefties? So if you took a look at 2 players with similar stats , one was 5R , the other was 5L, isn’t the 5R more valuable?

Yes but it’s a balancing act since you don’t wan to be too vulnerable to lefty pitchers. Also depends on your stadium

Generally, yes. But one of the guiding beacons of Strat is win your division. If you have, say, 3 LH SP's in your division then xR hitters will serve you well. If your division has 5-7 southpaws your hitters will need to be more balanced, as Casey cautioned. So after the league drafts check out your division foes and set your waivers accordingly.

agree with the above 2 posts. Just keep two things in mind; (a) you cannot platoon everyone as your will hit roster issues (limits or injury reserves; killer on platoons) and (b) be mindful of opposition bullpens where they may throw the lefties in reversing your platoon only later to be weak in later innings.

Well, Strat has factored in getting further at-bats against lefties. But when the price starts to get over 3 milion or so having a player 3l or more is difficult in a 80 million league because for one thing there is a significant variability in the number of lefties you are going to face. And they may be a drag on your offense against righties, which you face 75% or more of the time.

But a 5R almost certainly needed plationing. And platooning is one way to actually gain an advantage in Strat. You get the 5R and platoon with a 5L that costs between 1-3 million. Platooning gains an advantage because you are maximizing the good side of your player. You will see teams in ATG that platoon like crazy with a bunch of 6R-9Rs and 6L-9Ls. Harder to do in 20XX because of far fewer cards, but it can be done just maybe not quite as extensively.
