2020 Baseball Season - Question 3

Moderator: Palmtana

What is your opinion of the new extra-inning rule? 10th inning begins with a runner on second.

I mean, of course it is a lousy idea.

But in the current environment--it kind of makes sense. Or at least there is a plausible rationale.

I hope it doesn't become a permanent fixture. We'll see.

For this year I can live with it but I hope it isn’t a permanent rule.

This rule is the biggest unintended joke of the season. It's meant to shorten the game and get their precious investments off the field and into the safety of the clubhouse. With a man on second and no one out, winning baseball obviously calls for the first batter to advance the runner to third -- either by bunting or hitting behind the runner. Then you have the winning or go ahead run on third with less then two outs. But no one knows how to bunt nor hit behind the runner any more. Everyone is trying to achieve launch angle and exit velocity. So the runner stands out there on second while the next three batters go for money-land. Funnier than all getout to watch. And sad.

Again, I think there is little chance of it being implemented but I dont like it. Extra inning games are part of the charm of baseball.

As a AAA broadcaster (Syracuse Mets) last year, I came to appreciate the rule ON THAT LEVEL as a protector of pitchers who may be on the major league shuttle. Plus, there was always a bit of anticipation as to what strategies might evolve for the new situation. There were even a few sacrifice bunts.

Plus Plus, it got me out of the ballpark earlier.

In this MLB environment I appreciate it as a means to lessen wear and tear on what might be tenuous rosters.

That said, I am not in favor of it as a permanent part of the game going forwared.
