Can anyone remember?

PostMon Oct 12, 2020 4:31 pm

Can anyone remember so many Hall of Famers dying in such a short period of time? Tom Seaver died on Aug 31 and here we are less than 45 days away with Joe Morgan passing and Bob Gibson and Whitey Ford in between. It's getting so I don't want to check Baseball Reference or these forums.
I know Joe Morgan was big in Cincinnati and Houston but he was a local Bay Area kid as he was raised and educated in Oakland and lived nearby in the East Bay. So he loomed large in this area as well (SF Bay Area). He spent two seasons with the Giants and one with the A's at the end of his career so I got to watch him in person more often. And while his skills were somewhat diminished he was still an amazing player to watch. I'll never forget him hitting a three run homer on the last day of the 1982 season against the hated Dodgers to dash their hopes of a division championship. Like his teammate Jimmy Wynn who passed earlier this year he packed a lot of power into a small frame. RIP Joe.

Touché. How could I forget! That's five Hall of Famers in less than a month and a half.

The mother of my former fiance once told me that getting old was about watching all your friends die. I did not understand what she meant at the time but I am beginning to. When I was a teenager the HOFers dying were footnotes in history. Now they are players I remember rooting for. It feels more personal and the sense of loss greater. Not that I am complaining about old age and I certainly do not want the cure for that.

Some great losses to the game, tickling many of our memories.
I think it is indicative of the median age of many of us--it was the player era many of us grew up with, and the sunset of those players, unfortunately, has approached.
