OF range

PostSun Oct 25, 2020 2:45 am

apologies if this is redundant for many...would you play Gardner in LF and VReyes in CF or vice versa? My instinct says play the 2(Gardner) in CF with 3 in LF (Reyes) instead of the 1 in LF with the 3 in CF... Progressives Field 2019

Surprisingly, it's better to have Gardner in left.

Offense vs. Defense in Strat-O-Matic

PostWed Nov 04, 2020 3:04 pm

I don't know if Freeman is referring to this source, but if you use NERP, you can get defensive ratings from Offense vs. Defense in Strat-O-Matic by Dean Carrano, http://www.mfooz.com/bblog/wp-content/u ... efense.pdf

Gardner is a cf-2e1 [0.8] and lf-1e1 [-1.3]

Reyes is a cf-3e3 [4.3], lf-3e3 [3.2], and rf-3e3 [3.2]

Where the numbers in brackets are the defensive NERP allowed.

So, Gardner in LF [-1.3] + Reyes in CF [4.3] = 3 defensive NERP allowed.

And Gardner in CF [0.8} + Reyes in LF [3.2] = 4 defensive NERP allowed.

Surprisingly, it's better to have Gardner in left.

Yeah, that's where I got it. Guess I should have cited the source.

One thing this doesn't take into account (seemingly) if the OF's throwing arm. CF arm comes into play much more than any other OF. Any result of a clean hit with no asterisk and no fielder, SINGLE, DOUBLE TRIPLE, uses the CF's arm when figuring advancement of runners beyond what they would get from the hit. You definitely should prefer a good throwing arm in CF.
