Is this one of the best performing teams ever at $140 mil?

PostSun Nov 08, 2020 4:34 am

I've been playing the online SOM ATG game for more than 10 years and never had a non-theme league team at $140 mil that performed like this one. The team checked a lot of boxes:

1. Ring winner;
2. Led league with a 109-53 W-L record. Only the 4 playoff teams finished above .500;
3. 60 home wins and 49 road wins to lead the league in both categories. Just 3 teams were above .500 on the road;
4. 1344 runs to easily lead the league;
5. +384 run differential to easily lead the league;
6. 536 home runs to easily lead the league;
6. .310 team batting average to easily lead the league;
7. .384 team OBP to easily lead the league;
8. .648 team slugging to easily lead the league;
9. 1.032 team OPS to easily lead the league;
10. All 9 hitters in the starting lineup had 106 or more RBI, with a high of 198, & the average being 144;
11. All 9 hitters in the starting lineup scored 132 or more runs, with a high of 165 & the average being 146;
12. All 9 hitters in the starting lineup had 47 or more HRs, with a high of 79 & the average being 59;
13. All 4 starting pitchers won 20 or more games, with a high of 29;
14. Just 4 blown saves all season & was the only team in the league to have 5 times as many saves (20) as blown saves;
15. Just 3 caught stealing all season, but only 16 SBs.

The only player in the starting lineup who wasn't taken in the autodraft was Ralph Kiner, who was picked up when another manager dropped him during waivers.

Also, with nearly 400 teams, I'd never seen a triple crown winner in any of my leagues. But with just 6 games left in the season I realized that Josh Gibson was leading the league in the triple crown categories, which I didn't think any player could ever accomplish in a $140 mil non-theme league. Gibson hung on to win the triple crown at .374 79 198. Gibson also led the league in runs, total bases, slugging and OPS, and finished second to teammate John Beckwith in hits, 239-238. For his efforts Gibson also ran away with the MVP award with 420 votes and was the playoff MVP as well.

For what it's worth, of his 721 plate appearances, just 27.7% were against lefties, with the usual average being somewhere between 30-35%. However, Gibson mauled lefties all season, batting .475 with 37 HRs, an OBP of .572 and slugging of 1.315 in just 162 ABs.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't mention another team, that also played in Navin '24 at $140 mil in the 2020 Barnstormers Tour that went 110-52. My team was better offensively, but one can't argue with 110 wins. Here's the link:

Kudos to owner garyclaussen01 for putting together the 110 win team.

wow... there are not enough words to describe my awe at such display of total offensive dominance... and to think that it happened in an event of the Barnstormers Tour makes it even greater... 536 Hrs... 7 players with more than 50... 4 with more than 60 and one at almost 80... team Slugging at .648... 6 players in the top 12 in OPS all over 1.0... Simply scary... :o :shock: :ugeek:

Hats off BD... no doubt with that performance and championship that you'll be again part of the Tour's Finals...

Great offensive team with an incredible run differential, especially for the Barnstormers. However, that may be the weakest Barnstormer's League I have ever seen, Bernie's presence excepted. To me it primarily illustrates how a good manager can completely dominate a field of much lower quality opposition. That said, Bernie seized the opportunity quite impressively.

Congrats!
I think it may be critically related to the 15-day injury guys, on average, playing nearly a full season. I think only Dihigo played in less than 150, playing in 144.

When you get a light injury season out of 15-dayers Gibson, Dimaggio, Schmidt, Beckwith, Belle at each ~150-160 games, then you've squeezed a few more runs and wins out of a team.

It seems injury chance is priced better than it used to be. I think to get value above salary now, you need a little luck on injuries with those guys. I don't recall that being true on most of these types of cards with previous pricing, but that's just subjective.

That is not to imply this was luck, just saying it was an excellent team that also performed well, which I guess was the whole idea of your post, so sorry for stating the obvious. Answer to the title question is--yes

The team hits waaaay better vs. lefties, but faced a relatively high percentage of righty pitching. If that team had faced, say 35% lefty pitching, you might have had a +500 run differential!! :o :shock: :ugeek: :mrgreen:
