Here's a team using egvrich's settings, looks like we should steal close to 400 @ 78% success rate. Might not make the playoffs, injuries have hurt this team during the first half.

I think it is safe to say that egvrich's suggestions are mainstream among many managers.

There is no one answer, but for a non-theme league with decent managers, pushing team steal settings above normal is not typically a net positive effect as it results in too many steals of the wrong bases, at the wrong times, by the wrong guys.

The business rules for baserunning do not have the same effect, and in fact, it is much more conservative than most would want on a smallball team.

Still to the question, unlike some other settings, there is no need to guess. Try it and track it for your circumstance--the data is there in misc whether it is steals or base running.

I actually don't think what I do is mainstream.

Well I was going to say it is batstuff crazy to push the steal settings to very aggressive, but I chose to be positive instead :)
Maybe not I don't know. But I don't know of many managers that set team steal above normal except in very specific circumstances.

By mainstream, I think it is that most realize bumping team settings no higher than normal and using individual steal more/ and do not steal is the predominant strategy, but heck I assumed that was common knowledge re: how the settings work. Again, no need to guess. Try before you buy.

My stealings are always set at normal or conservative -- sometimes, depending on match-ups, I check more stealing or less.

When asked by other coaches how I set me stealing teams, almost every single one of them is surprised when I say conservative for the team setting. That is why I say it's not mainstream. Hope that makes a little more sense than my simple one sentence response? People naturally think if you want steals you MUST set the team to Aggressive or More Aggressive and while it will result in more steals it also results in more caught stealings which to me is counterproductive.

Very aggressive will mimic the style of play of the deadball era. If a runner has about a 55-60% chance, he's taking off. I would only use it if my team were loaded with Vince Coleman/Maury Wills types with low OBP and bad clutch.

Oh and ballpark would be the other factor. If I'm playing in Petco I'm going very aggressive because that's really my only means of generating runs. In a Forbes type park I agree that optimizing your steals for about 75-80% success is a good idea.

Why you want very aggressive:

Example in Petco:
Coleman on 3rd, two outs, '65 Wills up to bat vs a righty. Wills in the clutch has an OBP of .163, and Coleman depending on the pitcher/catcher may have a 30% chance of stealing home. Guess what I want HAL to do here if that's the case? Better yet, imagine the same scenario with the pitcher up to bat.

An extreme example but I have seen it come up. I'm guessing HAL is not sending Coleman home with stealing set to conservative/steal more.

Example:
You can set aggressive for 2nd so all the fast guys try
Normal for 3rd so the middling guys don't get thrown out at an 80% clip, but the fast guys might try.

Never for home.

This makes too much sense but would also probably require way too much coding to change.

egvrich wrote:Unless you're trying to set some kind of steals record, never set it for aggressive or very aggressive. It will result in far too many outs trying to steal 3rd & Home.

I build A LOT of base stealing/speed teams and I almost always set the team to conservative and the individual players to Steal More. I routinely will lead the league in stolen bases AND be in the top 1-3 in stolen base % and always well over 70% success rate, often times near 80% success rate.

I literally had no steals with a AAA and lots of AAs on normal at "Steal More." Even over multiple games against bad SB prevention teams. My most recent team managed a bunch, but a AAA with 290 times at 1B with more than half games at aggressive or very aggressive made fewer than 150 attempts at 2B (111-37, and 31-16 for 3b and 2-2 at Hm. Coincidentally my A catcher was 2-0 for Hm).
I've definitely used conservative with 1 speedster, but I can't imagine it working well with several as a base stealing team.
