Defense-Range vs Errors

Who is a stronger defensive player, for example, a 2nd baseman with a range of 2 with 22 errors or a range of 3 with 4 errors?

A 2-22 2B would allow 1.4 Defensive NERP and a 3-4 2B would allow 1.7 Defensive NERP. So it is a close call.

They are roughly even---though a 2 fielder will turn a few more DP (a better infielder will turn more DPs off the fielding chart as opposed to a fielders choice.)

with no one on base a 3e4 is actually a wee bit better, but with a runner on 1B this may change.

At 2B, a 3e4 is ranked as 24.1 and a 2e22 is ranked as 25.3 but no DP are taken into account. (lower is better--this is OPS allowed per game in card chances treating errors and hits the same)--a very good hitter will have about 100 OPS card chances offensively, a normal guy maybe 75--so you can subtract the OPS allowed from his offense and get a total.

If you buy the ratings guide that comes out the beginning of each season--it will give you the total OPS in card chances for each player--or you can add them up

Another way to look at it is at 2B you will get about 162 chances over the season--a 3 guy gives up 10% more singles than a 2 guy at 2B---16 less singles, but 18 more errors--though a 2 guy will turn maybe 4 or 5 more DP
