Last year when we were drafting prospects we knew that none of them were making the 40 man roster. This year however there will be a few of the prospects we draft that will have cards and will be promoted to play in our 2020 season. Problem is the draft will be after free agency and we have this rule about having our 40 man rosters in place after free agency. It seems kind of weird to have to sign a free agent that you know you are going to drop to make room for a better prospect and be on the hook for the dropped players salary as well. Thoughts?

Hmm, this is a conundrum. Perhaps we should move the prospect draft to early December? Thoughts?

It would seem that you could add a prospect between Season 1 and Season 2 during supplemental free agency as well. Have to eat a contract though.

Maybe prospect draft should be moved up, I'd go along with that.

On the other hand, everyone had a chance at these type of guys in last years prospect draft. Should we be "rewarded" for not taking advantage of it? Now I'm on the fence.

I have a few prospects that I will definitely use this upcoming year...when do you want me to "promote" them?

Madrigal and Ian Anderson.

I'm a little against this only because the prospect information will be a lot more up to date and available in February than early December. I relied heavily on mlb.com's top 100 prospect list and the like. Doing a prospect draft in the next week or two wouldn't give much time for research.

Yeah, sorry but I've only had time to research my actual roster so far. I would be at a huge disadvantage if we did the prospect draft in early December. I'm okay with promoting my prospect now instead. Just means I can't look for someone better in the FA draft.

I've got a possible solution, see what you guys think. We change the prospect eligibility clause from:

Sec 3.03 Prospect Eligibility: Prospects are defined as any player who has signed a contract with an MLB organization but who has no MLB experience prior to the start of the current MLB season. [Note, this means that players with no MLB experience prior to the 2020 MLB season, but who are carded in the SOM 2020 season, are still considered prospects and not free agents for the purpose of our annual prospect draft]. to:

Sec 3.03 Prospect Eligibility: Prospects are defined as any player who has signed a contract with an MLB organization but who has no MLB experience prior to the start of the upcoming MLB season.

This would return prospects to the way they were meant to be. The prospect draft wasn't designed to provide us with players who are immediately making the team the moment they are drafted. If we made this change, then any player whose first playing time was in 2020 would be a free agent and not considered a prospect for the purpose of our annual prospect draft as the current rule calls for.

I am so confused about the timing of seasons and contracts and prospect draft. And on the timing of how extensions must be made a season in advance or we lose players to free agency? I look at the spreadsheets on Google Sheets and I see salary info for 2021. If there's an FA in 2021, when do I lose the player? Phil has tried to re-explain things to me...am I the only one who can't keep it straight?

Totally agree. Makes more sense to see who wants to shell out FA $$, than get them cheap due to draft position as a prospect for 3 years.

Now, maybe there's a case for expanding the number of prospect draft rounds going forward, along with possibly keeping them longer, and keep more of them at one time.

In the case of Greinke and Ottavino, yes you lose them. You only signed them through the 2020 card season. I believe you lose Sano too, because he's Arb3, so you pay him whatever his 2020 cards costs, then he's FA in 2021. You had a chance to extend him for 5 years , or Arb him, after our initial draft. Looks like you chose Arb. If I'm wrong on Sano, someone correct me.
