Cal Ripken has got a 1 card...and I find it hard to believe he had great range at short at least in the sense of lateral dexterity, hops, etc. Maybe, as George Will opined, he was great at positioning himself and anticipating where the ball would go. It doesnt matter really matter if you record more outs...just not sure that was enough to give a 1 range.

6 seasons as a 1.
He regressed to a 3?

Agreed. He has a career .700 OPS. This year .956! What a great card he would have had with a 1. The 3 and his injury roll will knock a few $M off his card.

Injury- Strat frequently "punishes" range for guys who are injured.

You nailed it. Cal's positioning and knowledge of opposing batters allowed him to make up for his lack of range. and resulted in the 1 ratings.

"Injury- Strat frequently "punishes" range for guys who are injured"

Respectfully, you are wrong. What's an injury have to do with their range rating?

Andrelton Simmons played in 30 games and still got the 1.

I can see if Iglesias regressed a little, give him a 2.
But to go from a 1 (6 straight years) to a 3?

Betts is not rated in CF where he played 6 outs. Historically 1 out is all that is required for a defensive player to be rated at a position. This discrepancy has been brought to SOM's attention.

There is a difference between the word FREQUENTLY and the word ALWAYS. ;-)

Did simmons play in 30 straight games after an injury or was he in and out of the lineup with nagging injuries? Same for Iglesias? I do not know. If they both played straight through, Iglesias may have just fallen off. I know he DH'd a bit last year and I don't know what his injury problem was. If it was related to his legs and affected his movement, that could be the reason for the ratings drop.
That said, generally, those that shuffle in and out of the line up over the course of a season have had their defense knocked down from previous seasons when they play a full season.

Guys that start off injured and then play out the season or get injured and are lost for the season, generally will keep their historical rating.

Again this is not an ALWAYS type deal, but it does happen.

And sometimes, guys fall off a cliff defensively, that happens too.

Can you show me an example from previous sets?

Show me a guy, who had 6 straight seasons with a rating, any rating, and then drops 2.

You've given me a project for the weekend. I'll have to dig through my old ratings guides. Not sure I'll get to it, but I'll try.
