Pitching advice

PostFri Feb 05, 2021 10:03 am

I can’t seem to get pitching down. I’ve tried a variety of strategies. I started with a pick great starters and leave them in approach. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1566164. (80s mystery 80mil cap). I then tried a bit better bullpen on the back end and reduced the starter load a little https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1575508. (Atg9 100m). Next I tried some midd range pitchers and spread the bull pen budget around a bit more https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1590242 (90s mystery 81m cap). I finally got an ace that pitched well but nobody else https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1589266 (1999 75m cap). I tried totally ignoring defense to outslug a bit. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1589891 (ATg9 with 2 franchises. 60m). I moved to a screw it, let’s just put everything into pitching mode, 4 aces and a pitching friendly park and while the pitching went fine it killed the offense https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1604956 (atg9 2 franchises 125m cap.). This one where I can’t get any traction on pitchers https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1613195 (80s no salary cap). This one which is moving OK. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1612666 (ATg9 40m). And my mystery tournament team which is sucking wind. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1619268 (60s 80m).

I can’t seem to get pitching down. Offense I tend to be ok on unless I spend too much on pitching to get it working.

we joined about the same time and im still trying to figure some things out...my opiinion only.. pick 2 pitchers around 8 Mil pay 4 Mil for a great closer...pick your 3rd SP between 5 and 7 Mil...make your 4 th SP above 3 Mil...make sure you have a solid defense ....pick a park that helps your offense but doesnt kill your pitchers...dont spend much more than 1 Mil each on your other 3 RPs...Make your closer the setup guy too...set your top 3 SP to F1 in your pitching preferences your relievers to quick hook....Offensively Ive had Offensive success going with a RH lineup in a RH hitters HR park...Pay for 4 Offensive studs OF 1B 3B...dont waste a lot of money at C or SS......these are just some of the basic rules Ive had some success...my last 4 leagues Ive missed the playoffs by 1 position and current team is 26W 10L........this is still a game of luck one guy will out perform for someone else and suck canal water for you and yes some strategies just seem to magically work for one manager and not for another...some leagues are built around pitching and some around hitting...ive spent hours and hours on this and while strategy and learning to pick the best players at the bargain prices helps the bottom line I think is you either get the quality rolls or you dont...thisn can be very frustrating...look at some of the teams that have won in the leagues youve been in and look at what worked for them...there is no 1 way to guarantee success

I think it's tough when youre playing all these different games because pitching strategies are somewhat game (20XX, ATG9, Mystery, 80s, etc.), park and cap dependent. I could probably give some decent advice on 20XX, less so on ATG and thats it.

Some general advice:

(1) In power parks try to get pitchers who dont give up any BP homeruns
(2) Make sure you have enough quality relievers to cover the innings your starters cannot cover. Tired pitchers blow up. But dont get too much relief and waste dollars
(3) If you have really good pitchers in certain parks and maybe with a good defense...you may be able to have them pitch virtually all of your innings and go with .5 guys on relief. This can provide value for your team. If you miscalculate and they dont finish then your team will blow up.
(5) You can consider going more cheaply on starters and get several expensive relievers. This too can be effective.
(4) Spend heavily on starting pitching in pitcher's parks. In power parks with low bp singles I go more cheaply on pitching which usually means a cheap sp/good relievers strategy. I dont have as a good feel for that in ATG 9 as I do on in 20XX, though. Havent played enough ATG 9.
(5) Where is the cut-off at which you can use a pitcher against only side? Is it 2 or 3 ir 4 million.Be careful about relievers that are only good enough to be used against one side having to pitch a lot of innings against both.
(6) Even though a non-star BP is better than a star pitcher of the salary...I think it's more efficient to go with four* guys.
(7) If youre in a low bp single low bp hr park consider getting guy that walk a lot but dont give up any hits. The thinking is that walks will be stranded, maybe even in in high bp single low bp parks but definitely in low bp single low bp hr parks.

just to clarify..my experiences is with 80 mil ATG leagues....I also go with pitchers who are good at holding runners and dont make many errors also...pitchers who can hit are a plus also...and no matter what try to stick with pitchers who give up few HRs
