SOM will be dead in a few months

PostSun Feb 14, 2021 11:31 pm

No one will -- or should -- trust SOM with their bank card again, and the playoff credits will last only so long. Time to find a new habit. Why risk doing business with an incompetent company? Sure, some will take the PayPal route, but many won't. I'm not that eager to be so inclined. This was a catastrophic failure on their part, so many levels. Life has chapters and changes, all different, perhaps we should embrace them. :)

I just started a month and a half ago. I'm not going anywhere. I use Visa gift cards when I want to buy a credit to start a new team.

I may play a little less, but I've been playing Strat for 50 years, and have no intention of stopping.

This will diminish my business with them. I'll perhaps live off the playoff credits for awhile, then it's done. Can't trust them, so incompetent.

Points taken Hack. My debit card was compromised also. As it was 6 years ago. As it will be in the future. This must be your first experience with such an event. In this day and age getting a replacement card is a breeze. Updating other accounts with the new card? 15 minutes.

You've played the game for many years. Update your SOM billing info with your new bank card. That's what I did. What are the odds of it happening twice? Or use PayPal. Don't give in to the cyberpunks.

Exactly. I've had accounts hacked before, and not due to StratOMatic. This is the age we live in.

And in this day and age, the lack of professional correspondence is incredible. I have had multiple card compromises, but they were never handled this way by vendors who were compromised on their end.

Granted, a credit card compromise is minor, compared to the full identity theft I had in 2015--which was extremely unnerving and took months to correct.

But when the compromise is at a single vendor, and they know about it but don't provide individulaized notice to all customers, it shows they don't understand how this works.

It leaves me uneasy about their controls. Raises questions about how they manage users across their enterprise and who is doing their risk management. Or if security is just a second thought.

For me personally. an event like this would not solely cause me to stop using the product.
However, that is a personal decision. To denigrate or shame a fellow player's experience, knowledge, or personal decision on where they spend their leisure hours/$, regardless of the reason, is out of character for you Palmtana.

Also, a defensive shields-up mentality will not inspire confidence or loyalty. I was originally thinking nothing of this honestly, until seeing the company's response. Unfortunate things happen, but it's how we respond that can make a lasting difference.

I'm not impressed but equally unsurprised by SOM's reaction. Communication has never been the company's strong suit, to say the least. This is not a sophisticated organization. They have one thing going for them, which is a game to which I am incorrigibly addicted, and therefore will continue to play so long as the opportunity exists. Not so sure how long that opportunity will be there, considering the combination of players (justifiably) losing trust, poor crisis management on the company's part, and what I imagine is a financial tightrope the company walks - I have no actual information, but I've never remotely believed that strat "has plenty of money," as is sometimes suggested by commenters. For the entirely selfish reason that playing this is one of my favorite hobbies I hope this is not a death knell, but I guess we'll see!
