I know Im being entertained by the posts. This place could use a little shaking up.

Clearly, there is no expected privacy in league stats. We all know we can look at leagues we're not in by changing the url. Scraping the data from 500 leagues takes a computer proficiency beyond 99.9% of the managers here, though. Im not sure how the advantage is obtained, though. Measuring the performance of the players vs salary? Obviously, you would need a system to do that. Finding a link between use of certain players and wins? There always is a stats history section which tabulates the results from many leagues for each player which you could already use to look for advantages on players outperforming their salary.

Obviously, Austin Davidson is quite smart as you can be seen in how he writes and analyzes things and presumably younger with an advantage in computer skills. I dont think he has done anything wrong by doing what he indicated.

But if you look at his posts he indicates his username was created in 2016, which seems to be at variance with his only playing a few months...

Since I wandered back in to SOM, I've blocked the posts of two users upon first view for basically being assholes. They both have posted in this thread. There is remarkable similarity in the content and style of their posting. (and clearly you get under the skin of both). I would not doubt if they were the same individual.

OT - I only block two people as well, and for the same reason as you. And both of these folks also contributed to this thread. I wonder if they are the same two?

No point yet in blocking this latest a-hole though. He has the self-awareness of a gnat and the rage of a scorpion. Much more fun to watch him sting himself to death as he slowly commits social suicide.

Well, ONE of them would most likely fall under the category of "Who DOESN'T have him blocked?"

Main Line Expos wrote:Austin,

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I have long thought (but been never near being able to do) scraping collective data and regressing the key variable of winning teams would be insightful thing to do, and it seems you've done it.

Thankfully for the rest of us mortals, if I have this right, it data is less indicative at lower caps.

So are you looking for frequency of players on winning teams or running certain regressions to identify key parks and certain caps or something else.

Again really interesting discussion and thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Daniel

I'm not a statistician but I've managed to do a couple regressions in Excel (I have trouble with LINEST sometimes though, can't always get it to work). The one I can think of off the top of my head is I regressed how different parks affect the run environment. So I start with the average run environment for a given cap/DH, and then I'm able to tell it my park (and my average away park) and it adjusts the run environment up or down accordingly. Surprisingly BP singles have a slightly bigger coefficient than BP homers, which I never would've guessed. I then use that run environment to customize my run expectancy matrix and wOBA coefficients. Then I use those to get my WAR values. Identifying which players correspond to good teams would be an interesting regression experiment but I'm not sure it would be more precise than the values I get from just counting the cards using my version of Pelletier's system.

In truth there's a lot more I could be doing with the data. The main things I've used it for so far are determining run environments for different parks and caps, and determining popularity of players at each cap, i.e., what % of leagues is a player rostered in at a given cap. But the player card values are just derived from Diamond Dope.

You know if youre going to call people assholes you should specify who you are talking about. There is nothing posted here that warrants calling someone an asshole.

We dont have to be all sensitive here, but some posters feel entitled to lob insults at other posters and then get all sensitive when there is a reaction. Just treat people with respect as most people do here and you dont have to worry

which is why I did not post names (that and not wanting to feed the trolls) - but the behavior you describe is exactly what I would define as part of "being an asshole". Titling threads with curse words is another. etc. etc. ... basically as you say, not treating people with respect. etc.

Per my post, I blocked them prior to this thread. But if you have read through this thread and do not believe in this thread there is posting that warrants the appellation "asshole" - we have different opinions on that score, so be it.
