Sorry, no deal. You can’t trade picks you don’t have. It’s in the rules.
You can still have Hancock though, since you’re allowed 10 prospects and you only had 9.
This rule has never made sense to me.
To me you don’t stop owning a pick until that turn comes up at which point you have to forfeit it. If you can continue to make moves which would clear roster space so that you could make that pick, don’t you still own it?
For example, if Splinter were to trade, say Dylan Carlson and Jasson Dominguez for my 4th round FA Pick, that would give him back his 2nd and 3rd round prospect picks, correct? And if so, would there be anything stopping him from trading those two picks for Carlson and Dominguez?
I’m not trying to make a big deal out of it or anything, I don’t see why a rule that’s so easily circumvented is even a rule in the first place.
It’s a fairly common rule, at least in the other keeper leagues I’m in. But we can vote to change it before the start of next year if that’s what people want. I have no problem with that. Too late for this year though; we’re already underway.
For what it’s worth, the rule makes sense to me. Splinter had 9 prospects, meaning he only had room for 1 more. He’s no more entitled to the extra picks than I would be to picks in Rounds 11 - 15 if had only dropped 10 players prior to the Spring FA draft. In both cases, you get exactly the number of picks required to take you to the maximum number allowed.
And the scenario mentioned to circumvent the rule is hypothetical. I think it would be difficult to contrive the deals in a credible way. Carlson and Dominguez for #4 FA is not credible. Neither is Carlson and Dominguez for a #2 and #3 prospect pick. I would question them both immediately, and I would hope others would do the same.
Anyway, like I said happy to consider / vote on any rule before we start drafting in any year.
