What is your worst team to win the championship??

PostTue May 04, 2021 4:03 pm

I just finished the '80s season as part of the 2021 Mystery Tournament. This season was a lot like my overall performance, not great.

But, somehow, this team (i) that went 86-76, (ii) scored the exact same runs as it gave up during the regular season, and (iii) gave up 8 more runs than it scored in the postseason, won the league championship against a great group of managers.

I have had teams that went 83-79 and 84-78 win it all, but at least they scored more runs than they gave up.

What is your worst team to win it all?

My apologies if your question is specific to mystery leagues, but I recently had a very mediocre ATG team that won it all. I threw it together as a silly, Canadian-themed novelty team (Trout, Salmon, Goose, North, Borders, etc.) and had no real thoughts of contending. Like you, my run differential was exactly zero! But I won 89 games, then waited to get bounced from the playoffs... which of course never happened. Not my proudest victory, but I'll take it, eh?

I had to look it up. I won a championship with an 85-77 team that had a mediocre +11 run differential. I had several with about the same number of wins, and their differentials were all in the plus-forties.

What I did remember was the very best team I ever had. This 90s team roared through the regular season, winning 107 games and had a +230 run differential. I loved "watching" their games. In fact, this team spoiled me; it's the last team that I "watched" games. In the playoffs they fell behind 3 games to 1, won the next two, and then lost a 4-3 heart breaker. Ironically, the team that beat me (and went on to win the championship) was 85-77 and had a +48 run differential. I guess it came around full circle; I just didn't realize it at the time!

Thanks for sharing! I would be interested to hear about best teams that won it all as well.

Easily this team for me. 84 wins, minus 31 run diff.

Helped by the 100 win curse in the semis, closed out the championship with back to back 13-3 wins in games 5 and 6.

Matlack won 20 games, Oliva drove in 101....those were the highlights ;-)

I saw Rob's reply above and just had to post this one. I'm sure Rob has erased it from his memory.

My team was 79-80 but only down 2 games to Rob's team. His team couldn't hit lefties (slugging % 100 points less) so I throw Bailes, A.Anderson and Deshaises in our head-to-head matchup (and skipping over 21 game winner Steve Rogers). My wild idea actually worked, winning the last game 2-1 for the sweep. This miracle run continues with a 3-1 series playoff win and a 10-1 win in game #7 of the championship. This team started out 0-11 before the 82-80 final regular season record.

I can’t remember what I had for breakfast today, but I remember that one!!!

I thought I was a lock to win at least 1 game, “Quando Quando Quando” was my team name and ended up being what I was left thinking waiting for that win, LOL “When When When”
