From the baseball almanac: "Feller credited his arm strength and ball speed to milking cows, picking corn, and baling hay." What I recall him saying as the country changed and very few people grew up on the farm doimg hard physical labor that he thought arm strength declined in pitchers who grew up in a softer world than what he grew up in.

My point is that IF Bob Feller's fastball speed is estimated correctly thanTed Williams would not need modern training techniques, etc. He could just step out of a time machine...and hit.

At the risk of taking the thread slightly off-topic, the Wired article describes Glenn et. al.'s research thusly:

By studying cadavers, he and his colleagues found that the force required to tear elbow ligaments is roughly the same as what a pitcher asks of his arm throwing at top speed.

I can't stop wondering exactly how those cadavers were used?!!

Had not thought about that one...but I guess they have some device for pulling on the ulnar collateral ligament with increasing amounts of force until it tears.

Hmmm. I guess that's the kind of thing that can happen when you donate your body to science. Helping determine the potential future of the fastball. Who woulda thought.

As an offensive-minded guy, hence my moniker, I wouldn't want to donate my body to science for pitchers.
