James “Zim” Zimmer, Posthumous Strat-o-Matic Champion

PostSun May 30, 2021 12:28 am

James Zimmer, who used to the ID “zim13,” passed away on April 4. His team The Toy Cannons just won a championship in six games over my team, the El Dorado Brockabellas. (The theme of the league, which was a $100 million league using 2020 actual cards, was to honor MLB players who died in the past year.)

Zim managed to win even though he had placed .50M pitcher Colten Brewer in his rotation in place of $4.20M pitcher Julio Urias between April 1 and April 3, so Urias did not pitch at all after game 20 of the season.

The Toy Cannons started out strong, going 23-13 at the beginning of the season. The team fell to 52-57, but then won 18 of its next 20 games, and later put together an 11-game winning streak. The Toy Cannons finished with a 90-72 record, the best in the league, and a +100 run differential, also the best.

The Cannons swept the semi-finals in four games and got off to a 3-0 lead in the finals before losing two close games.

While I’m not really a believer in the afterlife, it’s nice to imagine that Zim somehow was able to influence some of those computerized dice rolls in his favor.

Here is a link to his team:

It's also interesting that he rarely won championships. And yet...

The current stats say this was his 21st championship out of 445 teams, so Zim won about 1 time for every 21 seasons he played.

A fitting end for Zim-- and on Memorial Day weekend, no less. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, Zim was an Army veteran. I recall that in one post he mentioned serving in Vietnam.

Are you sure it was Vietnam? Was he that old?
