It is a total clusterf#@k; such small pens, 2 roles per reliever, black box controlling how many pitches they can throw before needing 1 or 2 days rest, lefty guys being forced to face too many righthanded bats and vice versa, the list goes on and on! Should've chosen better starters with less $$ spent in the bullpen.
On the 2 roles limit, I have been much happier with my bullpens since not over-specifiying the relief logic. There were threads on this and why it makes sense, with real data to back it up, but in a nutshell:
Don't waste roles with LH specialist/RH specialist. That's just a dummy rule. Do it yourself: flip each specialist to avoid the weak side, and set on quick hook. Done--same thing as specialist. All the specialist thing does is do those menu selections for you.
Mop up is a good one to specify.
Do not use before x inning is also helpful to ensure your better reliever is not wasted except for high leverage situations
Other than that, by specifying all the niche role definitions of closer, setup etc, it is more likely that your relivers get used in situations that are either lower leverage or they get over-used.
Bottom line, try to gradually rely less on HAL's definitions and you may be surprised at the less stupid results you get. It has resulted in less heartburn for me that's for sure. Very rarely have issues--and all I specify is:
mopup
avoids
Do not use before...
Qk or Slow hook if applicable
Sometimes depends on opponent. For instance if I am facing a righty team, i will set my hard RH / reverse LH relievers to slow hook and my hard LH relievers to quick hook. You get the picture.
