365 Game Engine vs SOM Baseball Game

PostTue Jun 29, 2021 8:38 am

I drafted a team for round 1 of Players Championship Tourny, loaded all 12 teams, including mine into the SOM Baseball game and ran dozens of run through seasons to tweak my roster.

Got my team to where it consistently won 90+ games and would have the top W-L record.

Then the round 1 of the Tourny season starts and my team starts out 7-20.

I would say the 365 game engine is significantly different than the SOM Baseball game. So much so it's not really that enjoyable to play unless you know how to game the system.

I honestly don't know if you can expect to get similar results from your SOM BASEBALL GAME simulations here on 365. What I do know is that drawing any conclusions after playing 16.67% of a sample size of one is just wrong.

I would hope you would get similar results. Supposedly the same cards are used.

You will not get similar results as a general rule---probably not very close. I have tried the same in the past (7-8 seasons ago) and just didn't work out very well for modeling on-line.

With the pitching rule changes On-Line last 3 years, it probably is more different now.

The two game engines logic are quite different. On-Line is a different beast, ignoring over-usage is something the Windows version doesn't do well, and you have much less control over team settings, especially the pitching.

You team is certainly not a 7-20 team though (it's early in the season)---given salaries the teams are fairly closely matched--the park you use and the players in them, plus the mix of parks/players in a given league make much of the difference. The same team in a different league with different parks can be astonishingly different.

If you are new to online it takes a few teams to get a feel for what works, the best place to learn is the PC (pay attention to all the PC leagues and how the winning teams are put together) and read all you can in strategy posts.

Look at team stats in your league to see what is happening overall--and look at your L/R stats to see if you have a mismatch. Ask questions in 20xx and in Strategy posts--most of the advice is good.

been playing since 1968...........i can tell you for sure that 365 is completely different. never in 53 years have i had a game where all but 2 dice rolls were off my opponents pitchers card. never in 53 years have i seen 15 straight rolls on my opponents batting card. i have won 2 titles in 365 baseball so i am not some sore loser complaining. in the league i am currently in i have morton as one of my pitchers. look at his card and guess how many homers he has given up in 20 starts.
it is over 20 which is just plain statiscally wrong............i could go on

1. Definitely the same cards are used except in rare anecdotal cases.

2. The game engines are very similar, or were, however when they tried to "correct for Super Relievers" things got pretty messed up.

3. This is the most important point, YOUR SAMPLE SIZE IS TOO SMALL.

Lastly, to the gentleman who has been playing 53 years, that's nothing. Many of us have managed hundreds of teams, and many more have managed thousands of teams. There is an entirely different class of player online.... You haven't had those things you mentioned happen, because you havent played enough games or seasons.

Read a book on statistics, sample sizes and random chance.

Further more, so what if "Morton" has given up 20 HRs in 20 starts. That means nothing. Who has his competition been? I will go ahead and assume he's facing much tougher lineups than in real life. You can't expect perfectly replicated real life stats unless you are doing PERFECTLY REPLICATED AS IS GAMES.... Come on, you really don't understand that?

Who would Charlie Morton do better against in real life? The real life Cleveland lineup from yesterday? Or a 80 or 100 million dollar online lineup from a 12 team league? If the answer is not obvious, you are playing the wrong game.

I dont know about the small sample size theory. Ive played in well over 200 leagues...if youre 7-20 youre generally toast. Im not that great of a player but I dont think Ive had that bad of a start more than a few times. And my teams did not recover.

morton is pitching against the same players as the other starters on my staff who are way less statistically. all the other starters havent given up 20 hrs combined. morton just gets bad luck on the batters card.

my degree covers 3 years of calculus....my point is that in 53 years i have never seen such skewed statistics as i do in 365
