To Musial:

You only retain exclusive rights to a player until the first game is played. Then any other team who has said players card may pick him up. For example, if you didn't have J Clark on your roster; I could pick him up because Clark also has a card with the Giants. Additionally, I could use either of Clarks cards.

AFTER the first game.....or if you see a FA you want, doesn't hurt to ask the other owner if he's going to use them.

Oh - OK - that makes a difference - a big 5% of some salary difference.

5% only pertains to who you drop. With some planning, this can be minimized (the drop penalty) with very little impact since it is only one 3 game series by carrying a nickel scrub just to be dropped and playing a 'tactical' backup who is kept. And, of course, leaving just enough money available for the seemingly available star. In particular, fourth SPs can be 'manipulated' in this way to have a tiny drop penalty with actually no impact on the first 3 game series. Having said that, there are fewer opportunities to exploit than you might expect to be possible. The $ 140M cap is high enough that most teams can carry all of their best players. And fewer stars than you might expect have cards on other franchises.
