This draft is taking a bit longer than I expected. Fortunately, papavj kept us busy with a trip down mustache memory lane. I remember reading a post or story about a Strat Convention. The writer said most of the attendees were men in their 50s and they all had mustaches. He said he thought he stubbled in to a reunion of the 1970s Oakland A's.

I thought I'd contribute to the down time with a little reliever trivia. Of course you can look up the answers on line, but it's more fun if you try to answer the questions based on your memory. Are you ready?

1. How many relievers have won the Cy Young Award?
2. How many of the relievers that won a Cy Young Award were also their league's MVP?
3. Which reliever to win the Cy Young Award has the most saves?
4. Which reliever to win the Cy Young Award pitched the most innings?
5. Which team has the most relievers to win the Cy Young Award?
6. See if you can name them and the team they played on then they won the award.

.. and while i anxiously await my 4th round pick here .. i'll try out that trivia Jimbo .. and thank you, gave me something to thing about during a long day of work ..

1- not sure, but it can't be too many right ?? .. i'm sure there are a few i could never think of .. my guess is 6 .
- Willie "Guillermo" Hernandez (SURE of) - DET
- Dennis Eckersley (SURE of) - OAK
- Eric Gagne ("sure" of ?) - LAD
- Rollie Fingers ("kinda sure" of ?) - MIL
- Trevor Hoffman (not so sure of) -SD
- I'm assuming there is for sure at least 1 guy i don't know of .. probably more ! .. Mariano Rivera ? .. i think not with those bats in those years .. Bruce Sutter or "the Quiz" ?? .. don't think so, but maybe ??

2- pretty sure the 2 i'm confident in, but MVP also ?! .. my guess is 2 . i "think" Willie was the 1st to win both if my memory serves, and i also have semi-confidence in Eckersley; some years after Willie .

3- which had the most saves .. hmm .. not sure at all on that one .. but one of the names i'm pretty sure on is Gagne, so i will go with that . .. that was later on when "closers" were the real deal . .. i remember Righetti setting the mark in the mid 80's and i know it was "low" to todays standards, so it's gotta be a later year me thinks .. ? ..

4- most innings ? .. ahh .. the one name 1 know for sure would be on the list and seems likely so me : Willie Hernandez

5- Most on a TEAM to win a Cy Young ?? .. no idea .. as the names i think of, that would not have been for any same team (i'm sure it's NOT the Tigers .. homegrown Michigan guy here) .. .. but i'll go with San Diego off the top of my head (did Rod Beck win one later on ???!!) along with Hoffman ? ..

.. that was a tough one for an off the top of the head .. i "know" i must have missed a few that i'll kick myself for .. .. and with you asking which team had the "most", i'm assuming at least 1 team did indeed .. but i can't figure that one out .

.. anywho, thanks for that Jimbo ! .. always good to just think about those things ! .. i just know i missed someone .. ..

I'm pretty sure Mike Marshall makes the list for innings as well as winning the Cy Young and MVP, so I will also go with the Dodgers as the team answer.

That's all I have!

Here's some of the answers:

1. How many relievers have won the Cy Young Award? There are actually 9 relievers that won the Cy Young Award. You guys have named 6 correctly: Willie Hernandez, Dennis Eckersley, Eric Gagne, Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter and Mike Marshal. Here are the guys you thought might have won the award but didn't: Dan Quisenberry, Mariano River, and Trevor Hoffman. We're still missing 3 award winners, can you name them?

2. [b]How many of the relievers that won a Cy Young Award were also their league's MVP? There were 3 guys that won both awards. papvj got two of them right: Willie Hernandez and Dennis Eckersley. Mike Marshal won the Cy Young Award in 1974, but not MVP. Steve Garvey took that honor. Can anyone name the last one?

3. Which reliever to win the Cy Young Award has the most saves? Eric Gagne in 2003 with 55 saves.

4. Which reliever to win the Cy Young Award pitched the most innings? sog got this one. In 1974 Mike Marshal appeared in 106 games. Every one of these appearances were out of the pen. He didn't start a single game, yet he pitched 208.1 innings. That's more innings pitched in a season than some of today's starters. He had a record of 15-12 with 21 saves, and an ERA of 2.42.

5. Which team has the most relievers to win the Cy Young Award? It was the Dodger with Mike Marshal and Eric Gagne.

6. See if you can name them and the team they played on then they won the award. The six that have been correctly identified are: Willie Hernandez (Tigers), Bruce Sutter (Cubs), Eric Gagne and Mike Marshal (Dodgers), Rollie Finger (Brewers), Dennis Eckersley (A's).

I seem to recall Bobby Thigpen had a 60+ save season with the White Sox. Since that had never been done before, I'm guessing he was awarded a bogus Cy Young Award for that effort. I'm thinking an old school reliever for the Yankees from the 50s and 60s should be on this list, but the only name I come up with is Hoyt Wilhelm, but he was a starter, I think. Growing up in California in the 70s made me a big Dodger fan, so that is how I knew about Marshall.
