Beginning to think that taking AVS as early as I did, wasnt as stupid as I feared.
Rice, Will Clark, Parker, Reggie are all "better", but pretty sure AVS would not have got back to me.
The available players are getting pretty thin. Only 2 more players I actually want worthy of a 4th round draft pick and one of them is a 1B so not that excited about even that 1....

Rules question:
I assume for first league, we are going to have random divisions.
In future leagues, will the divisions be seeded? I dont care, just good to get that out of the way.

Gameplay info:
Seems like for a couple of people, this is there first keeper league. Personally, have not done one in years. I always seem to miss the posts where leagues are looking for replacements. There are some strategy things that I would like to mention.

also, just to be clear, I believe you may trade, drop, whatever your keepers. You wont be able to keep them if thy are not on your roster at the end of the year, but you can do whatever you want with your team during the year.

I believe it is agreed that for future seasons (at least the next 4 after this one), people will keep 3 players from their final rosters and there will be a 1 round draft based on the rior season's records. Worst team-draft first.
No tanking.
At some point, it will behoove 5-8 teams to not want to win. There is not going to be alot of second guessing, but no keeping your best players on the bench or playing your players at their worst fielding positions, please.

What will, and should, happen are lots (or some) of interesting trades. Teams that are out of it will be willing to trade their one-hit wonders (or even keepers) or generally their best players for potential "Keepers" on other teams that are in their bad years on teams that are in playoff contention.
For example, not unheard of for someone to trade Teufel, Lonnie Smith and Sixto Lezcano (ALL three together) in their best years for, say, Pedro Guerrero or Mike Shmidt or Rice in their worst years. This will give a huge advantage to one team that season at the expense of their future. May feel unfair to the other teams in playoff contention. Worse yet (for 11 teams) the other team will/may end up with 2-3 first round keepers for the rest of the 5 season run. That is fair. It can (and should) happen.

If you are the person who traded away Guerrero/Scmidt/Rice, really uncool to drop from the league after that season.
everyone is committing to 5 years. Stuff happens, but thats not cool.

Also, trading Lezcano, Teufel, Lonnie Smith in the ir broken years for a bunch of junk that won't be kept (just to lose games and get higher on the draft list) is not allowed. In a trade like that, you will be required to keep one of the players you traded those guys for.

By the way, I am not calling out anyone with those players. Not sure who has them-not checking as I write this. They are just good examples of players with an outlying year.

Re: 80's keeper league

.. I am for sure one of the "newbies" to a keeper league, but I'm super-excited for this !! .. 80's is when I grew up and really started into the game .. both Strat-o-Matic itself along with baseball in general, these guys / names are the ones I know best from that ..

.. I can assure all that I for one, would not do anything to "try" to lose any single game or series .. I just wouldn't have that in me ..

.. being new, I don't see any issue with year after year having the "normal" luck of the draw for drafting .. sure, the previous year champ may get the 1st overall pick .. but in terms of being "fair", I don't see that "luck of the draw" being anything more than fair .. if I finish dead last in year one, I personally wouldn't have any issue having that luck give me the 12th spot in the draft .. might suck ? Sure .. but "suck it up buttercup" .. that's why we're doing this offline but for keepers right ? .. we all have guys that are the definition of "keeper" players, so no issue .. all these guys have GREAT cards .. inevitably some of us will get bummer years, but that shouldn't be a factor come year 2 .. all starts anew ..

.. but those of you who are vets to keeper leagues have probably for sure seen some crazy things happen with trades / drops .. so just a question : would keeping the yearly draft "random" in terms of draft order; help eliminate any of those ? .. if you guys / gals who have seen it happen before think random could help eliminate those things from happening, I say keep it simply random .. we can all live with that ! (speaking for myself obviously) .. I play this type of thing for fun .. it's not a life-or-death thing .. "if" I can win then sweet ! .. but if not, I'm not losing sleep ..

.. this will indeed be a while lotta fun for me ! .. finish 1st, sweet ! .. finish 12th, I'll get you next time around !!

.. so if you all who have done these before and have those inclinations as to any "rule" that might keep anything on the level, I'm all good with that !

I agree that, theoretically, winning one year does not mean that you have an advantage the next year, and the draft every year should be random.
However, I blieve, I have always seen it as seeeded. If nothing else, it gives last year's winners a disadvantage. Sucks for the guys who came in 3-4 who get low picks with nothing to show for it...

.. understood .. and again, theoretically .. simply cuz that's how it seems to be done doesn't equate to making it the best option .. and "if" there were to be a majority that as we sit now, think that keeping it random could "in anyway shape of form" eliminate any such behavior; then why not ? ..

.. and again, newbie here; so i'm just throwing it out there .. i'm absolutely fine with any way we go ..

.. but "if" there would be any such "rule" invoked .. NOW is obviously the time to make it known, before year 1 gets underway ..

.. we all have the same chance at this point at a Championship .. we all have that exact same chance at finishing dead-ass last ..

.. i'm not opposed to either, but yet again; if there is ANY "IF" that could be eliminated from the scenario leading to such an outcome, then let's all agree to make the yearly re-draft random .. "if" that would be a semi-surefire way to not have to see something crazy happen, and end up "ruining" a league; or causing "bad-blood" .. then do it ! .. at this point nobody should disagree unless they are already building towards year 2 ?? and i'm pretty sure that's not the case .

.. but i'm not trying to push any rule or change .. i would sure like to avoid a worst-case-scenario and any sort of "tanking" for a better pick tho !! ..

.. just thoughts as we move along .. hope to not offend anyone . .. ballpark round coming up ! .. i'm trying to figure out where to go with that .. the ONE thing with the '80s leagues i wish were just a little different; almost EVERY single ballpark is configured the exact same way with very few exceptions .. not even a 1-point difference with HR's / Singles vs. L/R .. but i DO indeed love that this league will at least have all 12 "unique" !! .. i've always hated playing leagues when 8 of 12 parks are Wrigley, or Yankee Stadiums .. i have always tried to pick a "unique" park myself to avoid that, just for the fun of it .. i think others do as well .. but most seem to fill their draft card with "mashers" who will fit their park .. i've also figured out with my amount of leagues, that those GM's who do it that way usually have a good outcome, so it's hard to buck the trend there ..

.. anywho, best of luck here as we move along !! .. let's get this thing finalized and underway ! .. i'm pumped for it !!!!

Well, with the ever dwindling supply of top-notch players, a stadium selection in this round is a possibility; however; it's not likely. I am also down to about two potential picks. And this is where I will inevitably go with a conservative selection and lose. I'll pick a somewhat safe bet, passing up a high-risk-high-reward player. My conservative pick will have a terrible, injury plagued season and the guy I passed up will tear up the league. Is it possible to both love and hate this game simultaneously?
