In the article I posted above it says that before the underhanded pitchers started snapping their wrists they were required to "pitch for the bat." The pitcher and batter were "each doing his utmost to put the ball in play for the valiant barehand fielders."

I know its a shorter distance, but fast pitch softball pitcher Jenny Finch struck out Albert Pujols when he was in his 4th season. She also struck out Piazza and Brian Giles.
