Bobby Shantz

PostTue Feb 15, 2022 5:50 pm

I'm currently participating in a 60s Mystery League, and Shantz is my ace reliever.

I researched him today and found some fascinating tidbits about him..

1) He's still alive. Today, 2/15, he's 96 years 142 days old.

2) He was vertically challenged, as he was only 5 foot 6-1/2 inches tall.

3) He was pitching for the Yankees in that pivotal 1960 World Series Game 7 in the 8th inning when Tony Kubek was hit in the throat by the bad hop ground ball that would likely have been a double play otherwise and gotten the Yankees out of the inning. Instead, it lead to a 5 run inning for the Pirates, and they went from a 7-4 deficit to a 9-7 lead. Shantz could have ended up being the winning pitcher if not for that bad luck.

I'm thinking about creating a special ATG set of 1949 - 1964 players (covering the years that he played). I was going to give the league the name of "Ready to Take a Shantz Again". Any interest??

We in St Louis remember Bobby Shantz probably more predominantly when he left rather than when he was here although he had some decent results pitching for the Cardinals in the early '60s. But he was part of the Lou Brock trade from the Cubs as to his bit of notoriety, which most pundits agree catapulted the Cards to the '64 pennant.

I like the time frame of your proposed league.
Give any thought to the cap?
I like leagues where you might have several rounds of an ILC draft and finishing with an auto draft rather than just strictly auto draft.

I haven't examined the makeup of the players yet, but there should be enough to allow for a 12 team league. I generally prefer lower salary caps in the leagues that I compete in.
