Sorry I am one of the lame brains who did interpret your idea incorrectly. Maybe a supplemental draft system could work. But a second / mulligan pick--I don't see how a second pick could ever be properly prioritized for equitable use. I agree with blineimages in that the practical application would be problematic.

Regardless of the OP, it inspired an idea that is interesting--Tim's serpentine option. That seems like a relatively simple league formation option. Basically is already in place for LDs anyway.

I only answered with the capabilities that we had now, not speculation of things we would LIKE to happen. If it helps, I will summarize the suggestions made here and see if SOM will be open to the idea. Sometimes it works, sometimes - "dead air" - MM

While I like serpentine in general, the salary cap becomes a problem in Autodraft? In order to allow for players on a draft card already taken by others, how long does one make a draft list? Figuring the cap while putting 35 or more players in a list is a problem for both manager and the system.

Oh sure it would have to be figured out if important to people. Let me be clear: I am NOT advocating for changing the autodraft.
I merely found Tim's suggestion much more palatable than the OP, and even still, only as an option.

Would I want SOM putting resources to this versus all the other stuff that can be worked? NO WAY.

Moose I don't think it rises to that--that's how we got ATG9 bullpen algorithm. Maybe just let it continue to simmer. There were only a few people on this thread.

But heck they should hire you because you are a very action-oriented customer advocate!

can't speak to the multi-choice option but it seems to me that the operation which detects that a choice is not available could somewhat easily return the allocated $$$s to the 'kitty'/treasury and continue to the next draft selection in the league

Auto-draft works fine IMO. If at $80-$100 you don't have at least $10 in cash heading into waivers then you're just auto-drafting wrong. And if you're consistently running out of cash during waivers after starting with that cushion then you're doing waivers wrong.

The system can't leave a roster incomplete after the draft because what happens if the manager never completes the roster, how could games even begin to play with one of the managers unable/unwilling to field a complete team? The whole system is predicated on everyone having a complete roster following the draft.

Let me take a run at a pipe dream.
As was mentioned, salary cap is an issue, and also a valid roster. So each team needs 24 players, including 2 C's, 5 SPs, and 3 RP only, under the cap.
So, every round of a draft card has slots for A,B,C.
B and C must be lower salary than A.
B and C must be eligible for the same primary position if a hitter, or SP and RP only. Valid roster at the end.
So far so good.
Now for scenarios you can all poke full of holes.
If there's a round where multiple draft cards have a player listed in A for any round, the coin toss puts that player on a roster, as is done today.
HAL looks at B player for that round for one or more draft cards that lost the toss for player A. If the B player is listed as an A on any other draft card, that player is not drafted as a B pick. Then on to C picks for that round. If the C player is listed on any card at A or B, the C pick is not rostered and then the same thing happens as today, the next cheapest player at A's primary position is rostered.
This method puts a priority on A over B and C regardless of the round a player is listed.
One wouldn't list Ruth at A, Ted Williams at B, and Bonds at C in a uncapped league, as those cards will all be listed somewhere as A picks. The strategy would be to get players listed at B that you don't think anyone will list at A.
I play $60M, so an example at that cap could be Ichiro at A, Shotten at B, and then maybe McGee at C pick. Because Ichiro, Sosa, and Keeler A-B-C is a recipe for Harry Pham being on your roster.
Hopefully I explained this correctly. It makes sense in my head, but that's a scary place
