IDEA FOR FREE AGENT ACQUISITIONS

PostWed Apr 06, 2022 7:42 am

I remember when the 20% penalty was in place for years....I never understood why you have to take such a big hit for making a transaction. Is that 'realistic' to real life baseball?

Then it went to the current 5/10/20%....better, but still penalized for making a free agent swap.

I propose 'even up' and penalty free, free agent transactions......No Deductions in Team Value.

Since it would encourage a ridiculous flood of transactions, set a limit for each team to make free agent deals...and set it at 2...3...or 4......transactions per season...straight up salaries for salaries, no deductions in team's value.

It could even supplement the current rules in place,...just give each team a small set number of 'Tax Free Free Agent Acquisitions' (during the season...or even up to a certain point in the season, example: up til game 81),...in addition to the 5/10/20% system

I would choose this...if it were an option....How many times have you wanted to get rid of a 10 million dollar player but just couldn't deal with the 1 to 2 million dollar loss in value?......Anyone have any ideas about this?

20% penalty was before I started playing on-line--(it dropped to 5-10-20 after I joined online). Maybe someone who played in early days can speak up as to the actual reason, but my impression is penalty was imposed because teams could swap LH/RH specialist, high injury players--or whatever on a nightly basis---it was determined the drop penalty was kind of a necessary evil to keep teams from rebuilding every night if they wanted.

The idea of limited transactions has been proposed before--but it would have to be a very low number.

what would be interesting to me is a drop window of 3-6 games (say game 39 to 45) were you can do 3 drops with no penalty in that window. (add as few or as many as you want legally--if you carried 27 you could do a 3 for 1 drop and still have the 25 minimum)--a way for bad teams to try to improve--but good teams could improve too.

Even 1 tax free transaction per season would be better....or a limit of 5% of roster value. An 80 million dollar team can make 4 million dollars in transactions..without a penalty....or 10%....after you pass that mark,...the 5/10/20% deduction applies.

Would add a lot of strategy and planning to the owners...Do you use that privilege early because you're falling behind....or wait until later when you know who you're competing with in your division for a playoff spot.

making moves more easy during the season would keep it more interesting but I think to keep it more simple just have a 5% drop up to 81 gms then a 10% up to say 141gms...all said you can just create your own custom league

Then a 10 million dollar player transaction would still cost 500k to a Million $ (currently up to 2 million)....It's usually too much of a Roster Value Loss to benefit a team....2 or 3 moves and it can be the equivalent to losing a regular player in the 3 to 6 million dollar range.

One free transaction up until game 81 (limit of 12 million in salaries involved, which is about the highest player salary) ..Perhaps a limit in players involved as well (say max 3-5) - Go higher than 12 mil and tax that according to the current rules and the stage of the season...This would be great option if it's made available.

If you get a player making 10 million and up...it's like you're stuck with him no matter what,...unless you choose to throw away a million or 2 (past mid season) or find a way to make a trade with another team, which is increasingly rare, due to various reasons we're all aware of.

What if after game 120 we received 5 million dollars to spend on free agents to simulate late season trades and September callups. Also, let us carry up to 32 players for the last 40 games?

There would be lots of work involved in coding any changes to the game I guess....

I think players should make all their suggestions and SOM create a poll of "changes players would like" and what SOM feels is not too difficult to accomplish.

Any change which increases decision making and strategic maneuvers would seem to make the game more enjoyable, and therefore worth making.

The bottom line is.... 'is there a cost benefit' for SOM to make changes like the ones discussed here.
