You can only compare teams and players relative to their times. You can't transport a 2022 player back to the thirties. Example: Jesse Owens was a superstar sprinter and long-jumper, but he wouldn't make the Olympics today. Does that make him less of a superstar?

By saying today's sprinters would easily defeat Owens is meaningless, just as saying that 1930's pitchers were all horrible- they weren't relative to their times.

The Dodger's lineup is, for sure unbelievable, but so were the 1932 Yankees.

And?

Still the best roster in MLB HISTORY top to bottom. No one else even comes close.

Having a hard time saying a team had the best roster in MLB history when they did not win a division or WS. Sure they have one of the best rosters in history, but ultimately this game (at least for teams) is judged by winning. If you can't win the most in your division or win the WS with the best roster of all time, well something is wrong with granting them that title. The best of all time (whatever team that is) has to at least be the best that season.

Last I checked, they don't hand out trophys for subjective analysis on best team of all time. The do hand out WS trophy's though.

Follow up on 2021 Dodgers best roster ever and not even close comment.

Aside from this comment dissing teams from other eras like the 27 Yankees, 75 Reds, etc., I am not so sure they are "not even close" better than the 2004 St Louis Cardinals. That team won 105 games (led the major leagues) and their division and the NLCS. Lost the World Series to Boston, but at least they made it. That lineup had one HOFer (Walker) and three potential in Pujols, Rolen and Molina. Edmonds not much further down in terms of quality in center.

C Gold Glover Matheny backed up by Yadier Molina and a future HOFer
1B Albert Pujols in his prime and a future HOFer
2B Tony Womak hit .307 albeit with suspect defense
SS Edgar Renteria wha was an All Star that year
3B Scott Rolen future HOFer
CF Jim Edmonds one of the best all around center fielders of his generation
RF Larry Walker HOFer
LF Weak spot here with Ray Langford past his prime and John Mabry handling these duties

Closer Jason Isringhausen and 47 saves

Starting rotation solid without any great over the top guys, but no real weak guys either in Morris, Carpenter, Williams, Suppan and Marquis (4 of them won at least 15 games)

Bullpen of Kline, King, Tavarez and Dan Haren wasn't shabby either.

Not saying this overall roster was better than the vaunted "NOT EVEN CLOSE" best of all time 2021 dodgers, but they are close enough, along with the other great teams out there to call that not even close statement into question. I think the Braves of 2021 would not agree with you.

No, it's not the best roster ever , whether by a landslide or not.

Good call on the Reds. The 75-76 teams are the best I've seen in my lifetime, especially their position players and they won back to back Championships.

Bench- Hall of Fame, 2x MVP, 14 time All Star, best C in MLB history
Perez - HOF, 7 time All Star
Morgan - HOF, 2x MVP, 10 time All Star
Concepcion - 9 time All Star, 5x Gold Glove
Rose - HOF player, MVP, 17 time All Star, All time hit leader
Foster - MVP, 5 time All Star
Geronimo - 4x Gold Glove
Griffey - 3X All Star

Combined - 4 HOF players, 6 MVP's, 65 All Star appearances and 26 Gold Gloves

The pitching is not on that level but it is underrated. Both Nolan and Gullett were excellent pitchers but unfortunately both their careers ended before age 30 because of arm injuries. Pat Zachry was the 76 NL Rookie of the Year and Rawley Eastwick was the Rolaids Fireman of the Year.

Dodgers owned the Reds in the seventies head to head as well (with the exception of 1975, when half the team spent the year on the DL)

But to Radagasts' point. As far as STRAT goes, yes the 2021 Dodgers STRAT team would win the majority of the time playing any other STRAT team.

Amen. Which was my main point. Give me that roster in Strat-O-Matic and they would win most of the time.

I originally made the point after chuckling to myself how guys set up franchise leagues and say, okay I get the DODGERS, everyone else, "GO".

Furthermore if you had a time machine they would beat the crap out of most 20th century teams, especially prewar (all white) teams. Those pre war teams had a player pool of a couple hundred thousand ball players. Nowadays there are TENS OF MILLIONS OF BOYS PLAYING BASEBALL WORLDWIDE. It's not even close, today's athletes blow away athletes of the 20th century.

Just as an example, in 1980, there were exactly zero players in the NFL who weighed 300 pounds, and no QB had 3 TDs for every INT. Nowadays every NFL team has dozens of players in training camp who are 300+ pounds. And QBS routinely throw 3, 4 and 5 TDs per INT. Also look at the kickers, they stunk in the 60s and 70s compared with today. It's just a fact, it really doesn't matter how you feel about it.

Guess the Dodgers should have played Strat-O-Matic in 2021 instead of real life baseball with the Braves. ;)
