Why HAL? Why?

PostWed May 04, 2022 8:14 am

Why would HAL pull Randy Johnson for a pinch hitter in game two of a new season in the top of the 7th inning when his team had a 1 run lead and he was at F9?

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/game/playbyplay/459978/8

Then in the very next 1/2 inning, the bottom of the 7th inning, he allows Weilman to bat for himself with that same 1 run lead?

Johnson is set for don't relieve before F0 (yes, I know it doesn't affect pinch hitting) and the team is set for Consertative relief. Perconte was brought in to pinch hit with 1 out and no one on base ...AND WE HAD A 1 RUN LEAD AT THE TIME!!!

Had Johnson been left in, instead of bringing in Gossage who gave up 3 runs, with the same exact rolls, we would have given up 0 RUNS!

4-2 Gossage HR, Johnson FO
5-9 Gossage Single, Johnson K
SAC Bunt Wouldn't have been attempted
1-10 Gossage HR, Johnson Single
1-8 Gossage K, Johnson K
1-12 Gossage LO, Johnson PO

So again, I ask, why did HAL decide to pull Johnson, yet leave Weilman in in what was a very similar situation???

Because the Big Unit sucks.
I recommend no one draft him.
Even HAL knows he sucks.

SOM hit job? Look at HAL gloating as he filed his narrative:
"The highlight belonged to Bobby Higginson, who came through for the home fans when he smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the season). Elk Grove had 11 hits in the game while Barrhaven had 7, but Barrhaven had the more timely hits."

Captivating prose as always.

Sorry--no idea. Inexplicable.

Weilman S8 pitched about 70% of his starts as complete games in 1913.
Johnson S7 pitched about 26% of his starts as complete games in 2002.

Percanto's role as pinch hitter against lefties may have increased the probability of a pinch hitter being used for Johnson.

It's possible Randy Johnson would have stayed in the game and batted for himself 8 of 10 times given the same situation.
It's possible Weilman would have been lifted for a pinch hitter 8 of 10 times given the same situation.

As long as we're dealing with laws of probability affecting the next decision point all similar situations are not going to be handled the same way by HAL 100% of the time.

Good points paul, but in the game engine, the fatigue system is not impacted by what RJ did in real life.

In this case, he had to be below his planned max PCF level as far as I can tell, although we don't know what HAL calculates for that from outing to outing for each pitcher. But he wasn't even at 70 pitches. And, with the DNR before F0 in place with a lead, there doesn't seem to be a reason for it--except maybe as you said--just the vagaries of HAL.

So you're basically saying that HAL "went with his gut" which is just plain stupid ... Not your comment, but the fact that there is no logic behind his decision.

This reminds me of those times Hal has left a pitcher in to hit (when I actually wanted a pinch hitter), only to bring in a new pitcher to start the next inning. Hal is a sadistic bastard.

Hrrmph. Shows what you know, Matt. Everyone who is anyone knows that the Sadistic Bastard enhancement in the Max Rules is NOT checked. Just like the Weather Effects.
