I suspect most of it comes from the fact that most little league kids arent considered as catchers if they are left handed. Which means no little league catchers move on to Babe Ruth (or whatever next league up the locale has), which means no left handed catchers move on to high school or legion ball, which means no left handed catchers move on to college.
I bet that if you could make inroads in the youngest age groups they would work their way up. The cost for the extra mitt (noted earlier) and that I bet 99% of little league coaches would scream "You cant have a lefty catch" are going to limit this for a while.
