Good stuff. None of those reasons would explain why it's such a hard filter.

I suspect most of it comes from the fact that most little league kids arent considered as catchers if they are left handed. Which means no little league catchers move on to Babe Ruth (or whatever next league up the locale has), which means no left handed catchers move on to high school or legion ball, which means no left handed catchers move on to college.

I bet that if you could make inroads in the youngest age groups they would work their way up. The cost for the extra mitt (noted earlier) and that I bet 99% of little league coaches would scream "You cant have a lefty catch" are going to limit this for a while.

As a lefty myself, I always considered the "no-lefty as catcher" thing as nothing more than base discrimination! This has been validating, thank you.

Maybe John Henry's arm would have been a little better than +5 if he threw with his left hand. Haha.

He has a useful hitting card but the stolen base count can be scary against some teams.

My youngest just started t ball. We went out this spring and bought a glove. Came home to play catch and I realized/remembered. He’s a lefty when he kept trying to throw the ball with his glove hand. No catchers in t ball though. And I think he needs to be a pitcher.

Never even considered this conversation. A lefthanded catcher didn't ever enter my mind as a thing.

Interesting stuff

I was born a lefty. But in the late 50's that apparently wasn't something a youngster should be saddled with. My parents switched me to a righty. I still kick with my left foot though. The Babe batted and threw left-handed but wrote and ate right handed. I wonder if he was switched at St. Mary's.
