quick question on base stealing settings

PostWed May 11, 2022 7:54 am

So I have three players with strong steal ratings. I want to be aggressive with them, but have no interest in HAL making foolish decisions stealing third and home. To confirm, is the proper setting to maximize the strong cards while not prompting my whole team to run into outs:

Conservative on base stealing for team settings
select "more" for each individual player for for base stealing?

Advice would be much appreciated!

Your settings should meet your stated objectives.
Unfortunately, there is no setting to prevent stealing third. But Conservative should minimize the attempts.

Now HAL will only steal third with Babe Ruth at the plate facing his F0 right handed specialist, Johnny Bench catching and you are down by two runs in the ninth inning.

With those settings, you should be able to expect 75%-80% success rates with your good stealers and the conservative team setting will help to cut down on the caught stealing at 3rd and Home.

So yes, I agree you have chosen the correct settings.

I posted this last week under a different topic ...

I build a lot of speed teams and always use the same settings unless I am trying to break a record or win a contest.

I set my "good" base stealers (which is usually the entire team) for "Steal More". Then I set the Team Stealing setting to "Conservative" this reduces the number of attempts to steal 3rd and home from my experience. The overwhelming majority of the time, I lead the league in both steals and steal success % (which is typically between 75%-80%).

For base running, with a speed team (all 16's or better for example), I ALWAYS select "Very Aggressive" baserunning and my team takes a TON of extra bases over the course of a season.

Here's a good example:

Thanks everyone!

And hahaha yes, HAL no doubt will see the wisdom in playing a hunch in that scenario Labratory.

386/237/32 are great baserunning numbers even with a fast team set to very aggressive. (88% success rate)

My finals team had decent speed and was set to conservative. We ended up 386/138/49.
We tried for the extra base less than half the time with a 74% success rate.
I have always assumed that conservative means that you don't run unless you have a ~75+% chance at success. And sometimes your chances are 80-90%. So you should take less bases and average around 85% success.

Do you think that the 49 baserunning outs was just bad luck? Do I need a new third base coach?

I think that Baserunning setting should always be set on the most aggressive option if you have a fast team. I started doing that several years ago when someone (can't recall) pointed it out to me.

Ended up taking 10%-20% more extra bases with a minimal affect on the outs. So it's well worth it.

Now, on Bomber teams, I set it to conservative or ever extra conservative, don't want too many solo home runs.

Thanks for these helpful suggestions. I do set my stealing usually on "Conservative". My teams usually aren't oriented toward base-stealing, and they often steal not very often, but for high percentages. I generally mark all my weak base stealers as Don't Steal, and I don't use "Steal More" very often. I just leave the Steal boxes unchecked. So, egvrich, if I want to get more stealing without hurting my percentages, I'm wondering what sort of stealing ability would justify setting a player on "Steal More"?
As for baserunning, I generally set my baserunning at Aggressive. My teams often have a mixed bag of slow, medium, and fast runners. These teams usually achieve a high percentage of success of advances, but don't try for extra bases all that often. For example, one recent team--mostly a power team (333 HR)--had a 288 Opp / 101 Adv / 26 Out Baserunning record. My best runners were a 17 and four different 14s. Those four guys went a combined 56-16 on advancement attempts with 115 opportunities. A 13 runner (Jack Clark, who was on base a lot) also did very well, going 18-2 in 44 opportunities. So, evgerich and Frankie, would I be well advised, do you think, to set such a team on Very Aggressive baserunning, or just leave the setting as Aggressive? It seems like a close call to me.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Generically speaking, if you set all of your A stealers to Steal More and your team to Conservative, I have found that you'll typically hit around a 70%-75% success rate. With AA or better stealers, you'll be closer to 80% success rate.

And keep in mind that sometimes that steal ratings are just plain stupid (Example: Eric Davis has an A steal rating with a 20-16 set of numbers, clearly should be a AA). Point being, some B rated stealers should be set to Steal More as well IMHO.
