ATG Draft Question

PostWed Aug 31, 2022 11:35 am

When you draft less expensive versions of players, does that affect how HAL assigns the players when they’re drafted with the same pick?

For instance, three players list Greg Maddux first.

Player A Maddux $7.35
Player B Maddux $12.92
Player C Maddux $11.35

What happens? Does Player B get him because he drafted the higher salary version? Is it a three way coin toss regardless of salary? Any other details to note? :?:

No idea but I've always assumed coin toss.

In my experience he picks a similar value position. I recently drafted lower value seasons of players like Maddux in hopes of keeping them from my opponents and the replacements for my picks of players drafted before me were of a similar value as the value of the player I selected in my draft.

Original question: I have always assumed that the card for the player doesn’t matter; it’s where you have that player slotted on your autodraft card. I’ve never seen that assumption disproven.

Only downside of using a cheap card, as stated above, you get a replacement at that lower salary.

It also may affect the waiver order. I think it is weighted by salary misses and where that salary was ordered. Missing mariano duncan #1 is not the same as missing lou gehrig I think.

in the scenario presented, doesn't Strat randomize an order, then, 'snake' through the draft?

i.e., the randomly selected first team to get it's pick is last on round two...

to wit

round 1
team a
team b
team c
.
.
.
team j
team k
team l

round 2:
team l
team K
team j
.
.
.
team c
team b
team a

pretty sure the draft is ordinal and that salary comparison does not enter into which team gets a player drafted by more than one team at the same priority.

After you've explored all other avenues...then look at the rules!

"If a player was selected by only one team, that team gets him.If a player was selected by more than one team:The team that ranked that player highest gets him.If more than one team tied for ranking that player the highest:That player is randomly awarded to one of those teams that ranked him the same."

I don't think which version matters, just how high the ranking is. In event of a tie, it's decided by coin toss.

absolutely, freeman.

On waivers, I vaguely recall something about salary being a weight on the misses for waiver order determination and it seemed to match with observed results. But I don't recall the thread specifically and would not stake my scant reputation on it--just a distant memory.

Seems simple but an Interesting point to bring up J-Pav

Salary plays no effect on who gets a card in the draft or in the waiver claims beyond whether you can afford him during waivers.

On the draft, its not a snake or anything like that. Everybody gets their choices as long as no one else puts any of their cards on their draft card. If multiple people choose that same player, regardless of card salary, one of them randomly gets the pick and the others get someone else of same position and similar but less than or equal to salary. Thats the advantage to drafting the higher salary so you get a better replacement if you miss.

Check out the example here

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/help/rule ... ll#ranking

On waivers, they weight the picks you lost. The weighting depends on the league and the minimum number of players you must draft. For ATG where you need to draft 24, you would get 24 points for missing on your 1st pick and and 1 point for missing your 24th pick. Whoever has the most "points" after the draft gets first waivers. So you might only miss out on a few cards but if they are your first 4 picks then you will still get a good waiver spot. Again, its card rank only, no salary.

This is all listed and explained in great detail, with examples, in the rules.
