Willard Hershberger

Never heard this story before.


1940 Color- @Reds at Wrigley Field. They are wearing black arm bands in honor of troubled teammate Willard Hershberger, who tragically took his own life in August of that year after blaming himself for two late season losses.

Little known fact: high school teammate and best friend of Arky Vaughan. Very sad.

Yeah, it was very sad. He was quite a decent backup catcher and had a future. He'd been playing a lot because Ernie Lombardi was out with an injury, and Lombardi blamed himself for the death.
