Whatever happened to theme leagues?

PostSat Oct 08, 2022 11:57 am

There used to be all kinds of innovative ideas posted for theme leagues with the current set. Maybe they all get posted when the sets come out? I am paying attention to keeper league drafts at that time. I have tried posting a couple ideas but no bites. I know the Mystery leagues have ongoing theme leagues popping up all the time which I participate in but was hoping some would show up here as well.

20XX theme leagues tend to run more often from November till new set comes out--at least with the current set anyway.

I kind of like the Iron Glove leagues (were every fielder has to be 4 or worse except the guy you DH), they do need to have a draft for maybe 15-20 rounds though (then completed with the auto draft). Players like Austin Riley would have to play 1B instead of 3B.

A 24 team 65M cap league (65M seems about right for overall balance) a 60M league tends to not have enough players to go around in 20XX. The issue there is the odd salary league. Not exactly a theme league, but you have to specify a 65M team when you create it. Plus, it's hard to get 24 managers in a league. The auto draft can be brutal, with not much left over for waivers--but trades are somewhat more likely.

Then there are the half-team leagues that have become less popular as MLB teams are so have and have-not last few years.

I agree w/you on Ironglove league Miller. Drafts can get kinda interesting because guys who have that extra position that nobody every uses ( Betts at 2B, Tatis Jr in OF ) suddenly make them super valuable. Plus, its just entertaining reading the box scores. Like a whole league of Bad News Bears.

I ran that Iron Glove for years.

I stopped a few seasons ago when we could only gather 4-5 managers for it.

I'd do it again, if there's interest.

We did:

$90m (I think)
10-12 round draft

I also ran a Cut Throat league. Again, it died when nobody wanted to play.

It was $999m
The caveat with this league was...
If you sweep a team, you can trade for that player and it had to be agreed to.
The trades could be unbalanced too.
This was a brutal league.
