ATG replaces ATG

PostMon Dec 12, 2022 11:37 am

I saw something about the '51 Yankees where the DiMaggio era ended and the Mantle era began. The Yankees replaced a retiring ATG in CF with another ATG at the beginning of his career.
The only other time I could recall this happening is when Yaz took over for Williams playing LF for the Red Sox.

Are there other examples?

Add Jim Rice to Williams/Yaz, and that's 50 years of LF coverage, and 3 Hall of Famers.

Reggie Smith > Dwight Evans covers another quarter century in the other corner pretty well too.

I don't think anyone will come up with any quite so epic as lab's examples. The ideal is players like those four who spent their whole careers with one team.

There are probably lots of comparatively minor ones like McGriff > Olerud but that only covers a decade.

Extending the Yankee CF story a bit further, the Yankees had HOF centerfielders from 1924-1968, with Combs to Dimaggio to Mantle. That's 45 years!

As mentioned above, Red Sox went even further with Ted Williams, HOFers Yaz and Rice in LF from 1939 to 1989. That's a half-century!

There's also Stan Musial and Lou Brock for the Cardinals. Musial retired in 1963 and Brock joined the Cards via a trade about 1/3 of the way into the 1964 season. And the Cards won the world series. If we count that, the Cards had a HOFer in LF continuously from 1941 to 1979. That's 39 years.

And let's not forget Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra. The Yankees had a HOF catcher from 1928 to 1963.

There are probably other cases of one HOFer following another at the same position over a very long span of time. The fact that the Red Sox in LF and the Yankees in CF had a sequence of THREE HOFers at the same position over a period of 45 or 50 years seems to me truly amazing.

Padres had Dave Winfield in RF thru 1980. In 1982 Tony Gwynn joined the Padres and became a fixture in RF for years.

Here is an example where both HOF second basemen are best known for other teams
1964-65 Houston Nellie Fox passed the torch to Joe Morgan
