Evil Spock has the current winning bid on Ward, not ggyuppie. I corrected it below.

Evilspock increased ggyppie's previous bid for Taylor Ward from $2.65 mil to $3 mil a year at 11:16pm, but it appears that he failed to change the name of the bidder. The current winning bidder is EvilSpock. PLEASE BE CAREFUL TO ADJUST ALL THE RELEVANT INFORMATION IN YOUR BID.

This has happened every free agency. In the rules on bidding, sec 10.01 says you can make an upbid if you merely increase the number of years being offered, while sec10.04 states that you must increase the amount of money being offered per year and at least as many years as the current offer in order to be a successful upbid. We've already decided that sec 10.04 is the one that we are going with but Phil hasn't changed sec 10.01 yet. There are currently 2 bids that are not good upbids. Madal increased my bid on Raleigh by bumping the years from 4 to 5. ggyuppie increased evilspock's bid on Ward by adding an option year. Hopefully some others remember this being resolved the same way I do but if not I'll try to find the conversation from previous free agencys we've had.

Old, you are usually right with your memory of things so I don’t doubt you although I too would like to see the actual thread where Phil discussed this and made a ruling. We should resolve this conflict formally by having the “bad” rule deleted so that old timers and newcomers aren’t confused.

Personally i think the correct result should be opposite to what you are saying. Why? Because we allow teams to offer Option years without increasing the dollar amount per year. As long as a team is willing to pay more for a player overall, they shouldn’t need to up the average annual value at all (unless doing so is necessary to meet the minimum salary for a given year).

Both of the two current bids that you question actually do meet the required minimum salary for lengths of contract.

Also, teams have been proceeding for this entire draft as if the other rule applies. Kinda hard to switch course mid draft given the reliance of teams and the prior bidding patterns which have led to signed players.

Makes logical sense to this newcomer that EITHER more money per year or more years (even more by half a year) at the same money (for a greater overall amount of money) makes for a better offer. That’s the way I read the rules.

Are there other instances in this draft besides the two I mentioned where the length of the contract was the only thing increased? Not saying there wasn't I just never noticed. I'll try to find the previous discussion but it might take a while.
