From the Definitions of Terms section of the Official Baseball Rules, 2022 Edition:

FIELDER’S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair
grounder and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner,
throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner.

So by definition, no throw is made to first base on a Fielder's Choice. It is not necessary for the attempt to put out the preceding runner to succeed in order for the play to be scored FC, i.e., FC does not necessarily mean an out was recorded.

I think Max was on the right track a few posts back.

Are those SOM rules? I think they are Official Baseball Rules, 2022 Edition, which apply to real baseball, right?

I see this: "FC does not necessarily mean an out was recorded." But in this SOM case, an out was recorded on the batter, but why go there and not the runner going home who's gonna win the game!?

Even though I was the beneficiary of this dumb SOM decision, I've seen this all too often, have to call it out.

NO baseball team would throw to first to get a batter out without two outs IF the runner from third scores the game-winning run on that throw. How much more clear does this situation have to be?

No out was recorded. The runner on 1st was safe according to the play-by-play.

The explanation I've offered fits the play result. No throw was made to first - if it had been, it would have been scored hit or error if the runner was safe on first, which he was.

sjudd is onto it. The throw did go home, it just wasn't successful. If the throw had gone to first the batter would have been out (and obviously the run would have scored and the game would have ended). So it's a fielders choice because the fielder (correctly) chose to throw home rather than first.

Bravo.
You know this highlights one thing that would take this game to another experiential dimension: a game replay or play mode that actually looks like baseball.
