Season preview

The season starts on March 19th--here is a preview of the participants. The 4 teams with the highest payroll form the east--the teams with the lowest payroll will play in the west and the remaining 4 teams will comprise the central. The teams referenced are in the order of the payroll going into the season, not a prediction

East

New York Yankees: Owned by MFL536 with 9 championships, the Yankees have the highest payroll in the league. The Yankees have the big 4--Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera. Don Mattingly and Danny Tartabull along with Paul O'Neil add offensive power while Jimmy Key, David Cone and Andy Petite lead the starting pitching. Steve Farr and Steve Howe supplement Mariano in what looks like a very strong bullpen. The Yankees will be able to use up to $1.5 million in the mid-season draft.

Atlanta Braves: Atlanta was the first team selected in the team draft by YCBill. YC is a 30 time champion in Strat land. Led by the big 4 of Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Steve Avery and supplemented by relief pitchers Mark Wohlers and Greg McMichael, the staff will likely be stingy in allowing runs. The offense will be led by Chipper Jones, Fred McGriff and David Justice. The Braves will be able to use up to $1.5 million in the mid-season draft.

Montreal Expos: Led by Fench33 who has managed 298 mystery teams capturing 10 championships, the Expos will be led stongn starting pitching provided by Pedro Martinez, Dennis Martinez and Ken Hill. The Expos have an impressive outfield featuring Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom and Larry Walker. The Expos have a strong bullpen with John Wetteland and Ugueth Urbina. The Expos will be able to use up to $1.5 million in the mid-season draft.

Houston Astros: Burley Norseman returns managing the Houston Astros. The Astros had the most quality starting pitching available of any team selected. Burley has been active making trades trading for Billy Hatcher/Jack Armstrong giving up Darryl Kile. He then flipped Billy Hatcher along with Pete Harnich and Donn Wall for Jason Giambi. The Astros will likely have a strong offense led by Craig Biggio, Derek Bell and Jeff Bagwell along with Jason. Burley has managed 20 mystery teams making the playoffs 8 times. The Astros will be able to use up to $1.5 million in the mid-season draft.

Oakland Athletics: Led by Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco and Dennis Eckersley, the Athletics will be led by Generationnm1 who has won 32 mystery championships. The Athletics acquired Pete Harnisch from the Astros to lead the starting pitching staff which features Dave Stewart and Bob Welch and a strong bullpen with Rick Honeycutt and Jim Corsi. The Athletics will be able to use up to $2.0 million in the mid-season draft.

Cincinnati Reds : Nol15736 has led 25 90s mystery teams capturing 2 championships in this set and 4 overall. The Reds have a strong keystone with Barry Larkin and Brett Boone. Strong starting pitchers led by Jose Rijo, John Smiley and Tom Browning received a boost when Darryl Kile was acquired from the Astros. The bullpen includes Rob Dibble and Jeff Shaw will provide closing duties for the Reds. The Reds will be able to use up to $2.0 million in the mid-season draft.

San Francisco Giants: JJB92 chose the Giants who have the potential to have a strong middle of the lineup consisting of Barry Bonds, Kevin Mitchell and Matt Williams. Starters Bud Black, John Burkett and Bill Swift lead the rotation while Rod Beck will provide closing duties. JJB has led 35 teams delivering 6 championships. The Giants will have some additional flexibility at the mid-season draft with $6 million dollars in funds to supplement the roster.

Texas Rangers: Bigdinkent who has led 245 mystery teams with 25 of them winning championships. The Rangers will likely have a very impressive offense led by Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodrigues, Rafael Palmeiro, Rusty Greer, Will Clark and Julio Franco. Kevin Brown takes on the role of stopper while Jeff Russell will be closing games. The Rangers will also have $6 million to supplement their roster in the mid-season draft.

Cleveland Indians: PDBaileyfl has led 70 mystery teams and captured 4 championships. Having perhaps the most impressive starting lineup, the Indians feature Kenny Lofton, Omar Vizquel, Brian Giles, Manny Ramirez, Albert Belle and Jim Thome and Omar Vizquel which appears to be an all-star team. Starting pitching will be led by Rick Sutcliffe, Charles Nagy and Dave Burba. Jose Mesa will likely be the closer and the Indians will have $7 million to invest in additional players for the second half of the season.

Seattle Mariners: Led by potential superstars Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Randy Johnson and Edgar Martinez, the Mariners will be led by NewGuy1912 with his second mystery team. The Mariners also have Jay Buhner and Tino Martinez to supplement the offense. The bullpen features Jeff Nelson and Mike Jackson and the Mariners will have $6 million to enhance the roster.

St. Louis Cardinals: Manilacone has captured 15 championships in the Strat world and will be leading his second team in the 90s mystery set. The Cardinals have an impressive outfield---Bernard Gilkey, Jim Edmonds, Ray Lankford and Brian Jordan. Jose DeLeon and Bob Tewksbury will lead the starting staff while Lee Smith handles the closer role. The Cardinals will have an impressive $15 million to invest in players in the second half of the season.

Minnesota Twins: A very interesting strategy play, Drabb9529 leads his 32nd mystery team, 1 which captured a championship. The Twins have an impressive core led by Kirby Puckett, Chuck Knoblauch, Kent Hrbek and Shane Mack. The rotation will include Brad Radke, Kevin Tapani and Scott Erickson. The Twins will be able to invest $22 million in additional players for the second half of the season.

The league promises to be an interesting one. In season two, the teams remain the same but the owners will all take over a different club as we answer the question of "what could have been".

Games played--15

As we near the end of the first week of play, here is an early update of the division races. As a reminder, the east is comprised of the teams with the 4 highest team salary, the west is comprised of the 4 teams with the lowest team salary and the central is home to the other 4 teams.

East:

MFL536 and his Yankee club and YCBill with his Braves team are tied for first place with records of 9-6. The Yankees lead the division in runs scored (71) while the Braves have only allowed 32 runs--by far the best in the league. The Braves are relying on the big 4 (Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Steve Avery) who all have ERAs of 2.25 or less. In fact, the highest ERA on the staff is John Smoltz with 2.25---none of the relief core have an ERA higher than 2.07. The team ERA is 1.83 with an impressive WHIP of 1.08. The Yankees are led by Paul O'Neil with 4 home runs/15 RBI and Derek Jeter with 6 doubles and a batting average of .319.

The Expos led by Fench33 and Astros led by Burley Norseman have each had a slow start. The Expos are 7-8. While the pitching staff has been impressive--team ERA of 3.24/WHIP of 1.23, the offense has struggled. The team slash line is .211/.259/.315. Marquis Grissom (.141/.177/.281), Moises Alou (.214/.313/.393) and Mike Lansing (.220/.281/.254) have struggled thus far.

The Astros-who arguably had the most starting pitching options of any team in the league-have struggled. The team ERA is 5.49 with a WHIP of 1.43. Mike Hampton is 0-2 with an ERA of 10.66/WHIP of 2.37 thus far. Doug Jones has an ERA of 8.21 and WHIP of 1.70. Luis Gonzalez has struggled at the plate (.170/.267/.283) while Ricky Gutierrez (.146/.196/.229) have contributed to the team record of 5-10

In the central, the last team chosen in the draft--Generationm1 picked the Oakland Athletics--have a league best record of 10-5, good for a 3 game lead over the San Francisco Giants (JJB92) and Cincinatti Reds (Nol15736) who are both 7-8. Bigdinkent and his Texas Rangers are 6-9, 4 games off the pace.

The Athletics lost Mark McGwire to an early injury missing 8 games during game 3. However, this provided an opportunity for Mike Aldrete to take over at first base--Mike has delivered a slash line of .464/.531/.786 with 6 doubles. Geronimo Berroa has also overperformed---.448/.515/.897. Rickey Henderson has contributed .352/.470/.519 to the offense while Pete Harnich--acquired in a trade involving Jason Giambi--is 2-1 with an ERA of 1.86/WHIP of 1.00. Dennis Eckersely already has 6 saves.

The Giants have leveraged Barry Bonds (.436/.500/.952) and Kevin Mitchell (.420/.482/.780) to lead the league in runs scored with 93. Interestingly, the team has struggled at home with a 2-7 record. The team ERA is 5.16 with a WHIP of 1.49.

The Reds have gotten excellent starting pitching from Darryl Kile--acquired for Billy Hatcher/Jack Armstrong--who is 4-0. Jose Rijo has an ERA of 2.96. Rob Dibble has pitched 22 innings and already has 28 strike outs.

The Texas Rangers have been propelled by the hitting of Juan Gonzalez (6 home runs) and Dean Palmer (5 home runs)--the team slash line is .284/.342 /.431. The Rangers have been involved in a number of high scoring games-Kenny Rogers is 1-3 with an ERA of 7.72/WHIP of 1.67. Matt Whiteside has an ERA of 12.00/WHIP of 2.22 with 9 innings pitched adding to the teams struggles.

In the west, NewGuy1912 and his Seattle Mariners and pbdaileyfls' Cleveland Indians lead the division at 9-6. The St. Louis Cardinals led by Manilacone are 2 games off the pace at 7-8 while Drabb9529 and his Minnesota Twins are 5-10. Ken Griffey Jr. (.300/.368/.650) and Alex Rodriguez ((.328/.406//.552) have powered the offense while getting some surprising help from Mike Kingery(.360/.373/.400). The Indians have leveraged Brian Giles (.339/.371/.627) and Manny Ramirez (.356/.424/.661) for their offense while Jose Mesa has already racked up 6 saves. Surprisingly, the starting pitching has been quite good---Albie Lopez (ERA 1.93), Rick Sutcliffe (2.52), Dave Burba (2.19) and Charles Nagy (3.43) have all pitched well.

The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten offensive help from Todd Ziele (.333/.404/.471) and Bernard Gilkey (.310/.394/.397) which has helped to overcome disappointing starts from Ray Lankford (.160/.288/.266) and Jim Edmonds (.161/.203/.268). Donovan Osborne has an ERA of 2.70/WHIP of 1.55 while Lee Smith has 3 saves and has not allowed a run in 3 innings.

The Twins with the lowest payroll in the league but will be able to use $22 million for mid-season acquisitions--have relied on Brian Harper (.371/.369/.565) and Kirby Puckett (.333/.441/.526) to power the offense. Pitching has been a challenge--Brad Radke (1-2, ERA 6.64 and WHIP 1.53) and Scott Erickson (1-2 6.38/1.79) have both struggled thus far.

The Yankees (MFL536) and Braves (YCBill) continued with their winning ways and remained tied--both are 26-13. The Yankees have an impressive run differential of +74 and the Braves are at +50. The Astros (Burley Norseman) are ten games off the pace while the Expos (Fench33) are 11 games behind the division leading teams.

Astros: Jason Giambi, acquired via a trade, is bashing---.356/.439/.678 to lead the offense. Carl Everett has contributed .311/.403/.515. On the flipside, the pitching has failed to live up to their reputations. Doug Drabek has an ERA of 6.53/whip 1.70 and Mike Hampton is having an even rougher year---he's at 8.44, WHIP of 2.18. On the other side, Greg Swindell has a WHP of .99.
Expos: Pedro Martinez has been dominant---5-2, ERA of 2.22/WHIP .93. Dustin Hermanson is also pitching well, ERA 1.56, WHIP 1.13. Larry Walker is off to a good start--.325/.358/.484. Mike Lansing is struggling---.205/.272/.238.

Central

The Athletics (Generationm1) continue to dominate--they are an impressive 29-10 with a run differential of +46. The Athletics lead the league in runs scored with 229 (average 5.87 runs per game). The Reds (Nol15736) are 19-20 while the Giants (JJB92) are 15-24, followed by the Rangers (Bigdinkent) at 14-25

Athletics: Mike Moore is 8-0 and Pete Harnich--acquired for Jason Giambi--has delivered a 5-1 record with an ERA of 2.16/WHIP of 1.19. Mark McGwire returned from injury and has launched 13 home runs (.283/.453/.726) and Jose Canseco has 12 home runs--.279/.414/.557. Rickey Henderson .300/.411/.480 has 12 stolen bases.

Reds: Darryl Kile is 7-1 while Jose Rijo (2.59/1.11) have paced the starters. Willie Greene and Barry Larkin have each launched 11 home runs while Dante BIchette (.320/.381/.641) have been offensive stars thus far.

Giants: Barry Bonds (.396/.449/.711), Kevin Mitchell (.360/.433/.640) and Scott Hatteberg .349/.407/.613) have paced the offense. However, pitching has been a challenge with a team ERA of 5.05 and 7 blown saves with both Rod Beck and Jeff Brantley blowing 3 saves each.

Rangers: Juan Gonzalez leads the offense--Juan has 16 home runs and is at .325/.381/.701. Rusty Greer is at .314/.371/.474 while Tom Goodwin has swiped 13 bases and is at .301/.343/.346. Kenny Rogers has struggled thus far on the mound---he's 1-5 with an ERA of 7.04/1.62.


The Seattle Mariners (NewGuy1912) are setting the pace with a record of 26-13, good for a 5 game lead over the Indians (PBdaileyfl). The Cardinals (Manilacone) are 15-24, 11 games out and the Twins (Drabb9529) are 12-27, 14 games off the pace.

Mariners: The team stars are shining--Ken Griffey Jr. has 17 home runs (.329/.408/.720), Edgar Martinez (.3340/.410/.575), Alex Rodriguez (.338/.402/.529) and Randy Johnson 6-2, 76 innings pitched, 114 strike outs.

Indians: Brian Giles is off to a great start--.329/.394/.664. Sandy Alomar Jr. is at .316/.371/.529 and Jim Thome .296/.432/.512 have led the offense. Albert Belle has struggled (.229/.260/.494) but if he returns to expectations, the offense will be even better. Dave Burba has been a pleasant surprise---he is at 2.38/1.17 with a 4-3 record.

Cardinals: Bernard Gilkey has been pacing the offense--.336/.424/.453. Garry Gaetti leads the team in home runs with 9. Jim Edmonds has struggled at .215/.260/.356. Joe Magrane has an ERA of 3.56

Twins: Kirby Puckett (.340/.415/.539) paces the offense with assistance from Mike Paguliaro ..289/.349/.488. Kevin Tapini is 3-3 with an ERA of 3.88. However, Brad Radke has struggled 1-5, 5.27, 1.26 and Scott Erickson 1-5, ERA 5.55, 1.55 is off to a bad start.

The Braves (YCBill) took a 4 game lead over the Yankees--the Braves went 12-9 for the week (38-22 overall) and have the league best run differential at +62. The Yankees had a tough week going 8-13 and now have a record of 34-26. The Astros (Burley Norseman) went 12-9 during the week and are 10 games off the lead with a record of 28-32. The Expos (Fench33) went 8-13 and are now 23-37.

In the Central division, the Athletics (Generationm1) continued their winning ways and have a league best record of 41-19 after going 12-9 for the week. The Athletics have a run differential of +61. The Giants (JJB92) and Reds (Nol15736) are tied for second with a record of 27-33. The Reds went 8-13 for the week while the Giants went 12-9. Ken Griffey Jr and Jason Giambi are tied for the league lead with 56 runs driven in. Juan Gonzalez is one off the pace with 55 runs knocked in.

Doubles

Jason Giambi leads the league with 24 doubles which isn't a huge surprise. What is a a surprise is the batter with the second most doubles----Rafael Belliard from the Braves has 22 doubles. Scott Brosius (Yankees) and Kirby Puckett has 21 doubles each.

Stolen Bases:

Kenny Lofton (Indians) leads the league with 36 stolen bases. Otis Nixon (Braves) has 24 swipes while Tom Goodwin (Rangers) has 18.

Bob Tewksbury (Cardinals) has allowed 145 hits in 113 innings. Greg Maddux (Braves) has allowed 119 hits in 127 innnings while Andy Petite (Yankees) has allowed 116 hits in 103 innings.

Home Runs allowed

Charles Nagy (Indians) has given up 20 home runs in 82 innings. David Cone has given up 17 homers in 111 innings while Dave Stewart (Athletics) and Randy Johnson have allowed 16 home runs in 69 and 110 innings respectively.

Saves

Dennis Eckersley leads the league with 21 saves while Jose Mesa has saved 15 games. Billy Wagner (Astros) and Jeff Shaw have both saved 12 games.
