Card Nom Freebie from BS Tour--Make your case!

PostSun Apr 30, 2023 8:05 am

Hi guys,
I have a card input to make again this year from the Barnstormers tour and I'd like it to be in sync with what is going on here.

So, if you had only one card nomination to make, what would it be? Maybe from the top near misses heading into 23.2?

I will pick one Friday May 5th 5 pm

Cheers

Greetings Frank,

Thanks for the opportunity.

I'd like to suggest the 1997 Denny Neagle card. It missed by one vote in 22.3, by 5 votes in 22.4, only to fall off the grid in 23.1.

1997 Denny Neagle ATL SP(L) 2R / 20-5 2.97 1.08 / 3rd in Cy Young . Would give ATL(exp) franchise another LH option besides Glavine or Avery. NO CARD in set. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/3811/1690/1/90

Thanks for the opportunity.

1962 Norm Siebern, bullet-proof, .308, .412 OBP, 25 HR - A much improved card over his other two choices and a great help in franchise league play for the hapless A's of 1950-1960

Thank you for the ask. Congratulations on going that far.

There are certain types of cards that are harder to get voted in, but nevertheless valuable. Some to consider

Ellis Valentine. He has two left leaning cards already (7L and 3L). 1977 will be hist first "1" RF 1(-5)10 but is also a 6L. Or 1978 he is also a RF1(-5)12, and will be unlike his current cards because this one will be a balanced 1L card but with 8BP HR vs Righties, and will be a max 3 game injury risk. 1978 also has 16 speed.

Also, cheap "1s" are hard to get voted in. Here are a few players that this would be their first 1
Doug Flynn 1980 NYM 2b108 ops 600
Ken Reitz 1980 STL 3b110 679 ops
Tony Armas 1980 OAK RF1(-3)10 cf2(-4)10 810
Ed Brinkman 1972 SS110 538 ops

Also hard to get voted in are specialist relievers.

Steve Reed has one card that is 1L, but in 2003 for Colorado he was a 9R. Bad against lefties, but not grotesque (10/10 park readings OPS are 670/168
Billy Taylor 1997 OAK has no card, this 9R card should be pretty cheap [probably low 1 MM) because it's not that great (793/230).

1987 Dale Murphy, his best offensive card, he plays RF-1(-2)e8, 2L Balance, 44 HR (career high), 105 RBI, 295/414/580

1917 Benny Kauff, NYG. The Federal League star doesn't have a card, but this one is 308/379/388 with good speed, a 1(-2)e9 at all 3 OF spots. Nice cheaper smallball option....

Ripken 1990. best SS fielding year in the history of MLB. only 3 errors in 162 games! bullet proof so no defensive sub required. hit .250 but still hit over 20 HR'S AND 20 Doubles. Iron Man deuce should have that year's card in the set

I find 19th century hitters are the hardest to get voted in as well as the most underrepresented. Furthermore I'd look for guys outside the NL since the folks who run the nominations will sometimes exclude those leagues even though Strat is absolutely willing to add players from them (there are dozens already in the set and my Barnstormers add last year was Al Spalding from the NA). 1886 Bob Caruthers hitting card is probably top of my list, 201 OPS+ and he had a borderline HOF career. Or Jake Beckley is actually in the HOF and 1890 would be a significant upgrade over his current card and the first card from the PL, which was the strongest league that year.

My whole crib sheet is here: https://forum-365.strat-o-matic.com/com ... c#p5858788

NOBODY is ever going to use that Ripken card. Have you seen it?

Whew. Already going to be a tough choice even if no other inputs.

Crazy thing is that as huge as the ATG card universe already is, and as good as SOM is about regularly adding cards, there is still a lifetime's worth of cards to add.

Thanks for the work everyone does on this thread. Admittedly I always reap the rewards of your eforts but never did more than perused the thread.

Cheers
