On the evening of October 13, 1960 in a Pittsburgh, PA hospital bed there, was Tony Keubek, the New York Yankee Shortstop. He was being kept overnight for observation after bruising his larynx (when a bad hop caused a potential double play ball to hit him in the throat).
On the floor hallway, the saddened Kubek overheard the merriment from hospital staff, jubilant that several hours earlier, the Pirates had defeated the New York Yankees to become world champions (on the famous walk off homerun by Mazeroski).
Tony Kubek looked up and saw a visitor, a balding man in street clothes he did not immediately recognize. It was Dick Groat (the Pittsburgh Shortstop), looking in on the condition of his fellow shortstop.
We all hear and tell many baseball stories and love reading them and relating them ---- that's about the coolest baseball related story because it occurred after the crowds had gone home and the field was empty.
The Pirates had won and Dick Groat (who won the MVP award that year, and the batting award), had the where with all to visit his fellow ballplayer.
Hats off to Dick Groat.
