2020 Abbreviated season

PostTue May 23, 2023 5:44 pm

NONE of the hitters for 2020 have the bare minimum of 300 PA required for nomination. Are they forever excluded from ATG consideration, even though there is a full set of SOM cards for this season? Here's a list of players who either have 0 or in-game only injury: Whit Merrifield, Jose Altuve, Dansby Swanson, Francisco Lindor, Trevor Story, Cesar Hernandez, Trea Turner, Starling Marte, Marcell Ozuna, Manny Machado, Maikel Franco, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio, Nick Castellanos, Didi Gregorius, Freddie Freeman, Matt Olson, Carlos Santana, Kyle Seagar, Paul Goldschmidt.

Freeman had a monster season, winning the NL MVP.

Defensively challenged Ozuna had a breakout seaon, his best.

Machado had his best season, finished 3rd in the NL MVP voting.

Trea Turner also had an outstanding season, led all of MLB in offensive WAR.

I'm not stumping for anyone in particular from the 2020 season, but it's not their fault they don't have 300+ PA.
They should be allowed into ATG, treated just the same as the strike-shortened seasons.

I understand what you say, but many of us would just rather forget the 60ish game 2020 season, along with everything else about that year. Including the fact the hated Dodgers won this phony World Series (just my Giants bias, ha.) Not the players' faults, of course, but really a small sample size. Yes, one could compare this season to the small sample size of any player in a part-time or back-up role. The 1981 strike shortened season was at least 110 games or so, not quite comparable. But I'd rather just obliviate 2020 entirely, wipe it from existence, like an ostrich burying his head in the sand. Respect your point, but just my 2 cents ...

I'm not particularly excited about small sample size cards, regardless of how or why they are added.

And some of the players I'd really like to see may have had their best seasons, like Freeman, but if I complain about other small sample size cards, I'm gonna be consistent. (There's always that Fred Lynn 1974 card, )

I remember the 1994 Greg Pirkl card. 6 homeruns in 56 at bats. I want to say almost all the hits on the card were homeruns

As for 2020. The Juan Soto card would be an amazing card but I understand why these cards aren’t included. And the imaginary cards I’m not crazy about. The only argument for them is we allow the negro league cards that the original set were cards not from a particular season. I’d still lean against it though.

How about the 1998 J.D. Drew for the Cardinals. In 14 games .417/.463/.972 and 1.436 OPS with a 266 OPS+!
