Good fielding teams? Success?

PostSat Jul 08, 2023 11:17 pm

Just wondering if anyone has had success with purely good fielding teams -- as in the extreme -- low errors, the appropriate X rolls etc.

This one did well. Only time I've tried it to this extreme, and I had a DH to supply a big chunk of the offense

I don't have any idea how it will work at $100. Good luck though!

I’m in that league…. I went with a trio of $12m pitchers as the way I built out the team

I do have one team based off defense in my recent teams I’m not sure which of the older are but I have tried this before. The current one I have I went big on starting pitching, Pedro , Koufax , Johan Santana, & mike Caldwell (the cheapest at $8.38m) in a 80m cap. I have all 1 range players except Randy Bush as a Platoon at first (with Galaraga). I’ve committed the second fewest errors and have a team era of 2.68 through 108 games. 63-45 record with a 3 game divisional lead.

Opening night is tonight. I fear I dont have enough onbase but this is my first attempt at ATG. I went with Petco 1/1 1/1
and went with four very good SP. I wanted a lefty bat and a righty bat with big power who didnt get hurt. The rest of the lineup are 1 defenders with as much bat as I could get for the money I had.

Looks interesting, thanks for sharing ... some advice for a newbie to ATG -- at $80M, you can save even more money in the bullpen by trying to take down each reliever to about .50-60ishM and EXTREME split guys. And you certainly don't need to spend .72 on Halama as a 5th starter/reliever. Those guys will get so few innings in $80M if you set your starters the right way (conservative relief on team strategy, and pitching preferences, check don't relieve before F0 and slow hook).

Too much $ for guys on the bench, go cheap .50-60ishM too. Take all that extra money, maybe a couple or few mill, and upgrade either Ventura (doesn't fit your park, try a platoon of Chone Figgins and someone like Jordy Mercer who kills lefties, Jordy's likely not available) or someone else. Max Bishop's OBP looks great, but he's a SNAIL (12 run speed), not good for small ball, and 15 game injury eligible. I see you want Griffey and Puljos, but if you were to get Speaker for CF, he'd actually be much better than Griffey in that park. You actually don't need two big boppers. Need speed, OBP and hits, four ace strategy and very cheap bullpen and bench. Consider a few platoons definitely to maximize match-ups, always critical.

My (extreme) good fielding team opened 3-0 last night in a $100M league -- https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1734140

Made one error in 3 games, a .991 fielding percentage, 15 of 16 outs on X rolls.

It's a short sample size, and will be for awhile. The offense isn't likely to take a lot of walks, but it may bang out some hits. Playing in Dodger Stadium '99, 3 for singles on both sides, 9 for homers on both. I didn't care about the pitchers' fielding ratings, they will likely make a good share of the overall errors/X rolls denied. On holding down the opponents' SB and run games, I expect it'll be as good as it gets.

At DH, a Gates Brown and Lou Pinella platoon!
