A couple of things jump out to me in the last couple posts =

1. "It's not for me to say if this is a fair trade ..." FULL STOP, PERIOD. It is NOT our place to say. We can think all we want, but it is not our place to say. If the commissioner sees issue, the commissioner will most certainly address it.

2. "Well - not even thinking about next year ..." That statement is a non-starter. These leagues are all about thinking about next year. Whether this trade is fair becomes immaterial. If a manager thinks it benefits him, he makes a deal. Tanking in a 24 team league doesn't really guarantee much of anything.

We can't expect Paul to go all "Bowie Kuhn" and punish the Charlie Finleys (of which I've been accused of being on at least one occasion in this league) whenever there's a trade we don't like. It may suck if you're in the lead in a division and a trade like this strengthens the team chasing you, but you might have to go out and try to strike your own deal to improve your team.

People had stuff to say to me (publicly and privately) in this league when I traded Strider and Carroll for Witt, Marcelo Mayer, Ryan Jeffers and Kopech. The Strider-Kopech part of that deal looks HORRIBLE for me right now. But I'm pretty good with the rest of the deal. Witt is crushing it for a pathetic team, and Jeffers has the 2nd highest OPS among catchers. And Mayer is already in Double A. I don't need to justify, my point is, it's no other manager's place to dump on me and make me feel like crap, or tell me how I cost them their chance at the playoffs, or to tell me who I SHOULD HAVE gotten in return instead of who I did get.

You don't have to like it. But you don't have to express it publicly (or privately) either. It's a game. Everybody is different.

So, we have a rule that "kinda" addresses this:

9) There are no specific rules against "roster dumping". Owners no longer in a pennant race can use their best judgement in determining the makeup of their team, provided that all general roster size limits are met. However, it is expected that all owners will act in the best interest of the game.

I say "kinda" because I think there is some ambiguity. I view the trade as a current talent dump to get a better draft position. I assume that is what is referred to as "roster dumping" in our league rule, which would allow it. Is it in the best interest of the game? Debatable as that (best interests) is not defined. My "best guess" as to that language is that it's meant to avoid collusion. I.e. Here's my best players because I'm leaving this league next year, or I'll give you my 5 best players in this league and you give me your 5 best in League B that we are both also in.

So I don't think the trade is fair per say, but I think it is specifically authorized in our rules. And "fair" is debateable, because if someone is now in line for Dylan Crews it makes the overall haul much better than it appears on paper. It can be the motivation of a team to tank, it's specifically addressed and allowed. And, for the record, that hurts my draft capitol, so my legal position is against my personal interest. Just my 2 cents as how I see the league set up, but clearly ultimately a commissioner decision.

As a sidenote, and it might seem contrary and is not in the direct crosshairs of what we are talking about, I do view "best interests" as fielding your best team with the players you have. I don't think it's right to sit guys that should be playing just for tanking purposes. Drop them? YES!! Sit them? That's I think against the nature of the rule... But we can leave that for another thread :)

as our rules say, each owner must act in the best interest of his team. It is very much like real mlb baseball in that trades seem 1-sided at the deadline, but the other teams get prospects/young players etc... in hopes of improving for the future. I will say this, in our 24-team league it is VERY difficult to re-build when you are down. Most owners aren't willing to give up on their young talent (especially pitching talent) and thus you have to hit on some "gamble" type trades and hit on the prospect draft. The owners in this league just made it even harder by limiting the prospect draft to just 2 rounds. Thus, if an owner feels that his best chance to rebuild is to trade off players that had good years in 2022 to get some young guys that may be good in 2023 or 2024....that may be in his best long-term interests.

yes, it's a tricky subject, but I think we should let the trade go through.

also, I totally agree that no one should be "sitting" their better players to get a better draft position. If this is being done, please let me know.

Confirmed. The sell-off continues. Hoping Pivetta is useable next year. Higher ERA but low WHIP. Everyone else just sucks. But, yes, I am selling in part because I like the upcoming propect class a lot. You may not. But, if I can get top 5, I think I will get a stud. Sorry, not sorry. Of course, maybe I won't. But, the team was going nowhere. That said, I would never sit players. You will always have the best team I have on the field, even if said team sucks.
