Case in point: Just scoring a large number of runs, is not a slam dunk for success.
The concept boils down to this: score more runs than the other team.
There are strategies to prevent the other team from scoring
---Excellent defense with "1's" on D, particularly at the key positions--CF, SS, 2B--errors in the OF are often 2-3 bases
---Low "e" factors, including pitchers, which a lot of owners overlook--have to go to spreadsheet to get that info
--Excellent shutdown OF and C arms
--Pitchers with excellent hold ratings
---customize your pitching staff to maximize your advantage in your home park
--do not overlook catcher passed ball ratings and throwing error ratings---even a 1 catcher with a strong arm can get burned if he has high passed ball ratings and a high number of throwing errors
--factor in the number of LH hitters in div and in league in terms of your pitching staff
Conversely, there are strategies to maximize run production:
---high OBP particularly in the top 4 batting slots
--very low gbA chances on your hitter cards
--high natural HR power in home small ball park
--high BP HRs on hitters cards in home power park
--Plenty of speed throughout the order in small ball home park (ala Rich's model)
---high percentage base stealers
---"A" bunters, and doubles and triples hitters in small ball parks
--strong clutch hitters in the 5 and 6 slot
--custom tailor your hitters to your home ball park (factoring in div and league BP averages)
--factor in the number of LH starting pitchers in div and in league in terms of your batter selections
amd probably most importantly, make sure you have made your sacrifices and donations to the HAL STRAT gods......
